Week overdue - cervix question

Hi folks
Well I'm 40+6 over and had MW appt today. She wanted to do a sweep but couldn't because my cervix was still high. She said baby's head is low but cervix still in front (?). Also am still only 4/5 engaged (palpable, basically still on brim).

I've been getting increased tightenings over past few days but really have no other signs. I'm OK with it all - realise there is nothing I can do but wait. I have an induction booked for next Tuesday but would really like to avoid this if at all possible.

I had loads of qs to ask MW about induction and forgot to ask her what it means if my cervix is still high. Does that mean I've no chance of going into natural labour before next week? How long does it take for a cervix to "ripen"?!

Any advice gratefully received!

Did she document that you are 4/5th engaged because if she did this is the opposite to 4/5 palpable. The engagement of a head is written as palpable or engaged. 4/5ths engaged is deeply engaged with 4/5ths of the head in the pelvis and it is the same as 1/5th palpable, i.e.1/5th of the head is felt above the brim of the pelvis.

So your baby being 4/5ths engaged is a nice low head you have there which is an advantage and just because the Cervix is high doesn't mean you won't go into natural labour before induction date even if head was high. Anything is possible in my experience.

My cervix was high and clamped shut a week before I went into labour, and still high and just beginning to soften the day before I gave birth. Sometimes it doesn't take very long at all to go from "nothing" to labour!

LouLou - she said it's on the brim (which I believe is 4/5 palpable). She said it's not engaged at all! However, baby is certainly very low down or feels that way?

Franny K:
'She said baby's head is low but cervix still in front (?). Also am still only 4/5 engaged (palpable, basically still on brim).'

Oh she actually said it was at the brim. Sorry, what you quoted earlier confused me. I read the above quote but you obviously meant to put '4/5 palpable' as oppose to '4/5 engaged'.
