Breech baby at nearly 37 weeks to turn or not to turn???

Well first day of Mat leave and a trip to the midwife reveals my worst nightmare. We have planned for a home birth and even tho I have blood pressure problems I have managed to stay calm and keep my blood pressure down the whole way through. I have had no complications and have loved being pregnant but today we discovered that bean is still breech (complete breech at that) I have 3 options really and I am just wondering how anyone else is dealing with this? Do I get bean turned (is this traumatic, our MW say that bean's heat rate goes up at a heart rate dopler what will be physically pulled about do and I have read there is only a 50-60% sucess rate?? Plus MW said they may have trouble as I have very strong and frequent braxton hicks) do i go for a hospital birth and try for a breech delivery risking an emergency c-section- apparently better if it is not your first normal delivery (this is our first baby) or do I go for an elective c-section (my worst nightmare - I have white coat symdrome and panic plus my blood pressure goes sky high just entering the building - with the added nightmare of not being able to do much after???

Sorry to go on for so long but I don't know what to do and they don't give you long to decide!

HELP!!!!

Hun you still have nearly 4 weeks (by your ticker) I wouldnt worry too much over it. Buy a birthing ball and sit on it a lot and take walks often. There is a website that will help as well... http://spinningbabies.com/

Good Luck and try not to worry. There is plenty of time still

Don't seem to be giving me plenty of time. I have another scan this week and then I have to decide. Won't let me go much longer and reckon it is unlikley to turn (I've been doing positioning yoga on a ball twice a week since I was 18 weeks - at a proper class with every stretch and trick you can think of!) If I want it turned it will be end of next week, if I don't I can leave it but can't have my home birth or I have a c-section at just over 38 weeks!

You're right digs, they wont usually let you go past 38/39 weeks with a breech baby due to complications that could arise if you go into labour naturally.

Mine was breech at 34 weeks and I did a lot of research into the ECV. Personally I would have opted out of it as yes, it is successful in 50 - 60%, however approx 20% of those that are successful turn back anyway! Also I read it can be very dangerous, often ending in an emergency section due to placenta abrubtion or cord getting tangled.

Thankfully my LO has turned but I was planning to opt for a section. Same as you - my absolute worst nightmare but I felt it would have been safest for baby.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do xxxx

Our Anna was breech all along and no exercises/positions would shift her - was doing handstands etc from 20+wks onwards.

We had an ECV at 38+4 - it was painful and I wouldnt do it again - I am glad we gave it a go, but never again!!! We were given a success rate of 40-50% but we gave up not even half-way through as it was sooo sore. A previous poster mentioned that it is extremely dangerous - this is not true - I would never risk harming my baby.

We had Anna by elective c-section at 39+3 - we were told they like to do c-sections as close to/around 39wks.

We had a great experience and if my next baby is breech then I would happily have a c-section.

I was out of hospital within 48hrs and think I have recovered just as quick as anyone else having a baby.

I think it is unlikely your baby will turn now, so you need to decide soon!!

Good luck, anything I can help with let me know

Only going by what I've read and what my mw told me when I mentioned that in some cases it can be dangerous. It is a fact that a lot of ECVs end up in emergency sections due to placenta abrubtion. I would never ever suggest that someone would 'risk harming their baby' by having it done, I simply said I personally felt a section would be safer after the advice I was given by medical professionals.

I don't really have any advise about this, but I hope and pray that your baby will turn! .....my baby was (Transverse -lying sideways across my belly) for most of this pregnancy and just found out today that the baby is now head down....Over the last few days I have felt a lot of pressure and have felt the baby turn into position which really was painful!....

hope everything works out for you!

There is so much different information out there.

I had never been told/read that a lot of ECVs end up with emergency c-sections - if this was the case I wouldnt have gone for it to be honest. Although ours was not successful (as we didnt go through the whole procedure) I am glad I gave us the chance of a vaginal delivery, but I wouldnt do it again - a few of my friends had unsuccessful ECV's too. I am yet to meet someone whom it has worked for!!

Please do speak to your own midwife and doctor.

I have had 2of my 4 babies turned and no harm done. The drs monitor you very well and keep you in triage fir awhile after to be safe. And they all stayed that way. Is it painful no just uncomfortable but I do have a high pain tolerance. I would always opt for a version rather than surgery.
