+Protein +Glucose

Well, as is custom, I handed my pee pot to the midwife today & instead of merrily pouring it out she said positive for glucose & protein and said we better send it to the lab, but that I shouldn't worry at least (I'm still worried in case that was a comforting tactic though ). I looked it up, and I can't imagine glucose being a problem as I had a glucose tolerance test and it was fine, my iron levels are fine but all I keep reading about + protein involves pre-eclampsia?? But surely thats impossible as my bp was 110/60??
I don't fit any of the criteria for 'temporary protein in urine' but don't know what other possibility it could be. I do get flashes in my eyes, but they're really small & very random & without high bp I don't see how it could mean anything. Can this just happen randomly?

Sorry for the ramble, I'm just pretty confused x

Not sure hun, but at least she is getting it checked out. Protein can be present in the case of infection, but then there would usually be leukocytes (wb cells) as well. Protein and high bp don't always come simultaneously when you get pre-eclampsia; it can be one followed by the other.

I would wait to hear back from the lab but am surprised your mw didn't suggest further testing or something for pre-eclampsia.

If your kidneys are allowing glucose through into your urine it doesn't matter what your diet is, it indicates there may be some kind of problem. Eating a high sugar diet could lead to the insulin in your body not coping in the long run, but if you have had the GTT and it was clear then this should not be the issue.

x

well i had protein in my urine ( just a trace ) with blood pressure of 134/92 and i'v been seeing spots since 2nd trimester. But they did a 24 hr urine test on me and i had the normal amount of protein in my urine (for a prego lady) and they think since im under so much stress that is why my blood pressure is up...

but they said i dont seem to have pre-eclampsia so i dont think it is always the case

Like you, I have spots in front of my eyes but my urine is completely clear. My BP is around 130-135/70-75. I think it's important to know that certain symptoms can be just stand-alone pregnancy or stress side-effects. I'm glad yours was nothing more sinister.

My mum had preeclampsia & her mum got actual eclampsia & they had to deliver early (so my mum was pretty lucky to survive back in the 60s.) My grandma was really ill though so she was in hospital for most of the pregnancy, apart from normal pregnancy-like symptoms I've been okay so hopefully my bp will stay put.

I had protein in my urine at my visit 2 weeks ago. They tested it and turns out I had a minor UTI, I didn't have any other symptoms. 5 days of antibiotics and all gone. Could be that, since they test so often they catch these things really early, before you even know you have it!

And so I have... a water infection!
Er... yay. But I don't have a single sympton, suppose I shouldn't complain. Have just been given some antibiotics (the nasty big ones though that are going to kill me to swallow.) Glad it wasn't too serious :-)
