All places do it differently. If you want one, write it down and slip it in your folder, then if the midwife wants to make one with you, you guys just have to copy the one you've already done!

My notes have got a birth plan section in them but the MW hasn't got round to doing that bit yet. Not sure if she will. I'll probably do one from an online template anyway, because the notes I have from MW don't look like you can put a lot of detail in them.

Think everywhere is different though! Probably wouldn't hurt to do one yourself if you know exactly what you do/don't want.

If you look through the threads here, I think it was PitBullMommy who posted a link to a great website that she said was a huge help in writing out her birthplan.

I spent ages planning what was going in to my birth plan, but never got round to it. In the end I did it as I was having contractions, it was an A5 sheet of paper with about 8 bullet points on it. Keep it short and simple.

With my first I did a detailed birth plan, but he was 4 weeks early, I ended up on continuous monitoring and nothng went to plan.

As a result I didn't bother with a plan and just went with it as labour progressed.

With my 3rd had a diff mw and as I had chronic spd and the consultant was planning on inducing me @ 37 weeks, she sat with me and did a plan @ 6 weeks. TBH I don't think it was consulted @ all.

My advice would be if you have definite ideas about how you would like the labour @ delivery to be write them down and ensure your birth partner knows what you want as they will often be your spokesperson in labour.
BUT be prepared to be flexible and make sure your partner is aware you may change your mind in labour. You may ve adamant you don't want pain reief for eg, but in reality you may change your mind and the last thing you want is partner trying to stop you having it 'cos thats whats in your birth plan.
