What have you learnt so far at your Antenatal Classes?

Unfortunately, I've been unable to go to my local classes due to various reasons although I really wanted to. I'll probably invest in some sort of learn-at-home dvd just to compensate.

Could someone share what they have been taught so far so I can get an idea of what these classes are all about?

We only have 2 here. One Earlybird which was a waste of time for me as I was 12+4 and everything they talked about was all to do with what to expect from your first mw appointment and scan etc.

The next one is in 2 weeks for 5 hours and I don't hold out much hope of it actually being any use, everyone tells me antenatal classes are a waste of time!

I didn't learn anything from my NCT classes that I couldn't pick up from the forum or a bit of a google. What they did do was to help consolidate that knowledge.

I have three two hour sessions at the egining in March, one about active birth (dunno what that means!) another one...can't remember and then one about breastfeeding. Hoping that they are going to be fairly useful!!

I learned about some of the things that were specific for the hospital I'd be going to. And that I was better off without having watched the labor videos.

Oh, I thought maybe they would advise you more on what to expect during labour and give you tips on how to deal with the pain etc...like breathing techniques, key massage spots etc.

We did a half hour activity on breathing techniques, which was little more than common sense and the only massage we did was our hands!

Active Birth is a natural birth where you move around and change position throughout your labouring, rather than lying on your back with a monitor strapped to your bump.

i havent gone to any of the ones around here either, MW wanted me to and so did other professionals but i know people who could be going and it wouldnt be good if i bumped into them so ive been staying well clear. But to be honest ive learn ALOT from DVD's MW has given me and from people on here. I find its easier to relate to someone elses experince then to read something in a book and try and feel calm lol. But thats just me
