Is it safe to get teeth fillings done during pregnancy?

I can't remember the last time I got them done...it was a lifetime ago! I'm pretty sure they have to do an x-ray right?

Is it all safe during pregnancy or should I wait until baby is born?

(got my maternity exemption certificate through the post today )

its fine when they do the x-ray they might put a lead apron on you to protect the baby, and be warned caus of the hormones you might react differently to the local anesthetic they use

My dentist said that the dose of radiation that comes from the x-ray machine is very low and is very focussed on the area they are x-raying and is quite safe. She's just back from maternity leave herself, so I would trust her! You can also have the lead aprons on your stomach.

BUT you can't have metal fillings, the silver ones, when you're pregnant, only the white ones. And being the NHS I was told that I didn't qualify for a white filling... So check first!

Shirley.

My dentist refused x-rays but has had to put in two tempory fillings to last me until after LO is born. One has had to replaced with first part of a root canal treatment and the second has just fallen out...I am having a nightmare with my teeth this time around

Depends on dentist I suppose, mine wont even prescribe me antibiotics just incase.....and as I seem to have picked up an infection in my gum I need to bug the doctor

PS: I had to have some work done on a painful tooth, and was only given an eighth of the usual numbing stuff, so only my sore tooth was numb.

I had a filling replaced last week. My dentist advised of possible risks - there isn't any evidence to suggest it can harm the baby but they couldn't guarantee it. Personally I decided, for me, it was better to have the filling replaced rather than leave it and it become infected xx

Seems like a mixed bag. My dentist said no, come back after you've had the baby.

i had a temporary white filling done last week (which has all but gone now unfortunately), and I am to have the "proper" filling done Thursday morning.

Glad I saw this thread as dentist never mentioned what she would be using for the proper filling or that there would be any risk. I'll make sure that I ask her about it on Thursday before she does anything.

She didnt give me an x ray but she took a mould of my teeth

Lou

I probably wait until the baby is born then...don't want to take any risk...and I have no idea how I'll react to the anaesthetic whilst pregnant.
