39 weeks & head still free...

all, been lurking on he site for a few weeks now but this is my 1st post
Went for my midwife appointment yesterday, & all the way through pregnancy (well since 24 weeks as didnt find out I was pregnant until then) babies head has been down, & yesterday she couldnt feel it where it normally is & thought he may have turned & gone breech. So off to hospital we go, midwifes there feel babies head straight away, but say it is still free at the moment (not breech so all ok). They did explain that babies head may not engage until labour, but I am starting to worry that I may not be as far along as they think as my due date is purely from the scan I had when I 1st found out I was pregnant (very irregular periods etc so unsure of LMP date). Guess what I am trying to ask is how accurate do you think the scan dates are for dating the baby & and anyone else in similar situation eg 39 weeks gone, not engaged, & no sign of a show
Hope this makes sense!
Bev

welcome and congrats!! not too sure about the accuracy of scans but i have heard that some babies dont start engaging until you are actually in labour so maybe thats just what your little one will do??

Thanks for welcome & replies!
I am hoping that his head will go back down this week & that he decides to stay there this time lol. I am probably just being paranoid & impatient (even though this hasn't been the 'longest' of pregnancies!!!) as all my measurements have been in line with the amount of weeks pregnant etc so far, so they can't be far wrong!
Thanks again!

Did they take your blood for tests too? Usually the hormone levels (called 'quantitive HCG') in the blood can also verify what the doctor said. The more pregnant you are the higher the HCG level.

Yes, I had blood tests done at around 26 weeks, but they didnt mention anything about being able to date from those. They just took measurements of the baby from the scan I had once we found out & dated according to matching measurements on chart.
Will just have to see what happens I guess - they told me to try & sit upright rather than laying down (which i tend to do unless as got pain in pelvis which makes it painful to get back up from lying on setee) & to take walks etc to try & encourage the head to go down. Guess he is having too much fun moving about at the moment to be stuck in one position for too long!
Thanks for replies!

Congrats and welcome. Not sure about measuring dates either, I know from some of the others here they can vary. My dates have always been spot on, but since I had a regular period, knew when I ovulated and conceived, that is not surprising to me. All babies have their own schedule, and I am sure that your LO will get into position in time for his arrival!

I am on baby number 4 and none of mine engaged until around 40 weeks, first not engaged on 42 weeks! Scan dates are pretty accurate, especially if you have been measuring ok up to now. Fundal height not so accurate after 36 or so weeks. Have to be patient.
