For actually getting baby home:

Do practice putting the car seat in the car and more importantly (the bit we forgot!) practice tightening and losening the straps of the car seat.

Easily done!

There were were, having paid to exit the carpark, time ticking before the ticket becomes invalid and we were all smug that we'd fitted the car seat well in advance. What we forgot was the tricky hidden little gizmo that only prior knowledge will help you find to loosen the straps. We could only make them tighter and tighter until we had to wedge her into the seat under the already tight straps! Nightmare!

Looking back - its really easy when you know how!

That's near impossible for me. We're moving to a hot country, where the room temp won't get below 20c
I know what you mean..... It's currently bloody freezing outside and the temperature in the babies room is 18 degrees, without the radiator on! Our house is so well insulated that I dread to think what temperature the room will be in the summer. Safe to say it'll be more then 18 though!

  • trust your instincts, you will get to know your own baby and just "know" what they need - ie. nappy change, feed, hug.
  • relax - don't try and get back on your feet as soon as possible, take full advantage of offers of help.
  • take even an hour a day to yourself if you can, you are still a person! not supermummy!
  • eat well and snack on fruit/cereal bars to keep your energy up for those night feeds (let hubby or relative cook)
  • from my own experience - everyone wanted to hold Bailey, but when she was sleeping, i said no! I left her to sleep without being disturbed.
  • I put the hoover on when i got out the hospital so bailey wasn't scared, or startled at loud noises.

Thanks, this is a very useful thread. I can see I will have to read up on just what should/shouldnt be adequate and safe for a baby to sleep with. Im hoping baby will swaddle well but I also got a cot bumper as part of a set and we have a huge cot bed for later use. I cant see the baby being anywhere near the bumper if he/she is placed at the foot of the cot and thought bumpers were really only for decoration.

Is the main concern with bumpers to do with them possibly untangling and suffication?

I think the main problem wth bumpers when they are small is that it significantly reduces airflow around the cot- and lack of airflow has some links with increased risk of cot death x
