What about those sleep sacks? See, now I'm nervous to swaddle in case I overhead the baby, but our house isn't terribly well insulated so it can be chilly. Those sleep sacks just cover their body, and the straps over their shoulders.... GAH! I'm going to be so paranoid...

I was advised to 'layer'. So for example, as I intend to swaddle, I have bought a purpose made swaddle blanket (called a Miracle Blanket) that is thin cotton, so baby will prob wear a vest, sleepsuit, miracle blanket, then a cellular or crotchet blanket tucked into crib over that.
It's important not to use a fleecey blanket (only for use in prams or when baby is bigger).

Babies shouldn't wear a hat indoors - other than for the first night in hospital xx

I'm the same honey - my house is 400yrs old!! So can get very chilly....Brrr!!
Apparently though, this is better for bubs than a 'hot house'.
I won't use a sleeping bag until bubs grows out of his/her swaddle blanket, (prob around three months) as you need to make sure the sleeping bag is a really good fit and baby can't slip down inside it.
Swaddling is safe, but you just use a thin cotton sheet, then thin layers on top if required.
Have a look on eBay for a Miracle Blanket - they are fab!!xxxx

we were told that a full on bath is fine, 2 - 3x a week (any more than that and the skin can dry out - we always use lotion after as well), we just have to make sure the umbilical cord is completely dry, and we clean it 2x a day w/ a wet Q-Tip. The nurse even did it the first day to show us, and his umbilical cord is doing just fine

I've only been a mom for a week... but my do's:

- make sure you have some quick healthy snacks around to eat - time disappears and sometimes you forget to eat (I do anyway)
- take even a couple minutes daily to talk, hug, cuddle your OH
- sleep when your LO sleeps

Don't
- beat yourself up for not getting any housework done - the dishes and dusting and laundry will be there tomorrow, LO is much more important (some days all I do is wake up, feed, change, and go back to bed)

I used the sleep sacks for my 2nd from the day he came home untill he was about 11 months old, iv bought some for this lo aswell. You can get all the diff sizes.. just make sure they fit, i think they are brilliant.

Always have baby at the bottom of the cot/crib especially if you are using blankets, that way they cant wriggle down under the blanket.
iv always had my babies sleeping on their back

When i started using the bottle i never heated it in the microwave i always heated it by sitting it in a jug of boiling water. If you heat it in the microwave you can get hot spots which can burn baby.

One thing iv found that has helped as daft as it sounds is to NOT creep around the baby.. if baby was sleeping and i needed to hoover, or the dog is barking, tv's on.. dont worry. I continued hoovering, never had the tv down really low and certainly didnt tip toe around the baby and by the 2nd week with each baby they were sleeping through the noise and it didnt bother them

xxx

dont be afraid to try different things - my lo was soo colicky for the first 2 weeks but i was too scared to do anything. i eventualy got the courage to use infacol and it was a complete life saver! i felt bad that i let lo suffer untill i was brave enough to try it.

TRUST yourself! if you think there is something wrong get it checked, even if its nothing it will put your mind to rest. its the doctor / midwife / health visitors job to help and your taxes pay them. its not worth worying (sp?).

I used blankets for both of my babies. If you use the cellular blankets then it's very difficult to suffocate as they are full of holes. I also was told bathing babies with cords on is fine as long as you dry the area fully. Newborn skin is going to dry out anyway, they have just spent 9 months in water so it's totally normal for skin to dry out for the first few weeks.

Do:

- Sleep as much as you can. Lack of sleep builds up and it takes a while to recover from and will make you more easily frustrated and snappy with OH/family
- Buy infacol in advance and keep a good stock.
- Wind baby thoroughly, even if it takes in excess of 30 mins.
- Let baby sleep on you. You aren't spoiling them/making a rod for your own back.
- Use olive oil on dry skin. But, not on hands as it can act as a laxative if they put them in their mouths.

Don't:

- Overwash baby. Babies aren't dirty like adults. Top and tail them every day with just water and bathe 1-2 times per week.
- Give up BFing (if you plan to do so) if baby wants to feed constantly, this is normal. It doesn't mean baby isn't getting enough.
- Try to do it all. Ask for help when you need it or things will get to be too much.
