Breech and C sections....

Does anyone know if they will let you go into natural labour and then section you if your baby stays breech?

I am some way off a section just yet and still hopeful for my planned home birth. In the event of my baby not turning, the MW has said they will recommend a section at 39 weeks. I REALLY want to avoid a section at almost all costs so I'd like as long as possible for the baby to flip.

So I wondered what the chances are of waiting for me to go into labour, then checking the position before deciding to have the section......

Any thoughts or experiences welcomed

In US I heard they always check through ultrasound before your c-section if it's really necessary and see if your baby has turned. I am pretty sure the doctors would want to avoid unnecessary c-sections if possible.

I'd like to think that too. Seems silly to have one if you can avoid it. I dont want one for many, many reasons not least of all the fact that I will have a 17 month old to care for too and I'd like to be back on my feet asap, like I was after my first two.

At my unit, if you go into labour or waters break before your booked section for breech we usually get you to come in and whilst checking to see if everything is ok, we do a presentation scan on all ladies who are known breech. If baby has turned we leave you alone and if necessary send you home to await events. Some woman provisionally book homebirths in the hope baby turns that way they don't lose that option if baby does turn. Also, here we give you until the usual Term plus 12 when you are usually induced for being overdue before booking a section unless medically contraindicated. At least it gives your bubs time to flip. thank you lou lou! You've given me hope! My mw has gone ahead and booked the home birth so that's the route I'm focusing on for now. There's time yet but I want to give my baby as much time as possible so c section really is the very last resort.

I dunno much about it but i think as long as you know the risks of delivering Breech theres no way anyone can stop you! Doubt they'd let you do it at home like but ya know! Better than nothing! Come on Sid turn arounnnd :-)

I'm not too sure yet if I'd want to deliver him on my own but I'd at least like to go into labour naturally to give me and the baby the hormonal benefits etc and so that he comes when HE is ready.

There's plenty of time yet but I like to have 'a plan'!!

Im breach as well. I have been told that they book you for 39 weeks. Scan you on the day and if still breach section you. I dont think they would let you naturally go into labour as if you where to go into labour naturally and baby be breach your section would become an emergency section. Which they want to avoid at all times. Keeping in mind that although most labours are long some people do have quick ones

I'm not sure either tbh but just to let you know I have given birth naturally to a breech baby, obviously it was undiagnosed, but cos it was so late down the line (I was pushing), they let me carry on. You wouldn't get your homebirth but you can if you wish have Sid breech to avoid a section as long as his breech position is a good position. Faith was bum 1st you see so they gave me an epsionotomy(sp) and guided her out while I pushed x

Oh thak Jem! Do you think that her being breech contributed to her hips? My sister's friends LO was breech and they knew so she had a planned section and then from 6 weeks he had the velcro style braces. They told her it was common in bum first breech babies.
