Unheard of to use GP for checks instead of midwife?

I don't trust my midwife. She is very nice and friendly but I've grown increasingly concerned, and after today I am actually concerned to the point I feel it could hinder mine/baby's welfare if something WERE wrong, especially if I was someone who doesn't take such guarded interest in her health after years of ill health. I have to see a consultant, but after seeing him at 17 weeks he said he didn't want to see my again until 36 weeks for a presentation scan and to chat to him; I have to see an anaesthetist but still haven't had an appt through and I don't get any further growth scans. At first, early in my pregnancy when worries were not so over-whelming, I was quite happy not to have to see the consultant - he was happy that I'm fit and healthy and I was happy with the care my MW was giving at that point... but I wasn't waddling around and suffering ailments back then, and TODAY hadn't happened back then! Now I'd give anything to have a bit more input from someone who has a bit more about them (ie, my consultant).

I've been seeing my wonderful GP since 14+3 due to dizziness, fainting, tiredness etc. He's been brilliant... always checks my blood pressure, knows I have white coat hypertension so allows for that and puts me totally at my ease, which shows in the fact my BP with him is 135/70 as an average (at home it is slightly lower). I know when my BP increases due to anxiety (which I get when I see medics) and over the years of knowing my GP, it's eased a lot. So he has been monitoring my BP every 2-4 weeks since nearly 15 weeks; and he obviously does the visual checks all GPs seem to do (look you up and down!) and he always asks how I have been and takes a proper interest and tries to help! I don't actually need to see him anymore as I am now on annual leave leading into my maternity and I'd been seeing him due to being signed off work; however, I have made an appt to see him a week on Friday to get my BP checked and to chat to him after what happened at today's (Tuesday) appt with my midwife.

I would feel more confident about seeing my GP and having him keep an eye on my blood pressure, urine and general wellbeing, as I know he can also request hospital (antenatal) treatment if necessary. I will still see the midwife for the heartbeat stuff and to keep my antenatal care going, but I just don't have any faith in her now. I know my GP won't be able to measure my fundal height, but tbh, my MW can't be ARSED, so it's not a problem!

Is this unheard of? Is anyone else seeing their GP more than/as much as their midwife? Luckily I've had enough scans upto now (including private ones) to know that at the moment she isn't a huge baby; she's active and has a good strong heartbeat; apart from the usual side effects and onset of SPD, I'm reasonably well. I'm considered a low risk pregnancy according to my midwife (and the consultant didn't necessarily disagree as he handed me back to her... but then again, I was only in seeing him for about 10 minutes!) but the fact I am overweight means I am at higher risk of certain things and I'd rather someone who actually gives a damn was keeping an eye...

I see my GP/OB all the time... I don't even have a midwife. so.... there's no problems with seeing the GP or OB at all.

Well you know about the numpty midwife I have seen the last two weeks, if Id had her right through my pregnancy Id have no hesitation in seeing my GP WEEKLY if it put my mind at ease.
A bit part of having a healthy pregnancy is feeling confident in the health care you are being provided which in turn helps you remain relaxed. If that means seeing your GP regularly then so be it.

when i was pregnant with my 1st i used to see gp and midwife, called shared care. you are free to see your doc when you want hun so dont hesitate especially if you are not happy with the care you are receiving

my gp did half my care with ds , this time its been MW and consulants doing my care, you should see who your comfortable with, just GP's in the UK arent as focused specifically on antenatal care so dont tend to have as much experience with it thats why we see mW's

ive been getting a bit fed up of my midwife as she never seems to answer my questions or care when ive mentioned im having a lot of pelvic pain. was thinking of going to see a gp myself but didnt know if they would deal with me incase it is just the midwifes job. think after reading this i will go to my gp. sounds like ur getting more answers and reassurance from ur gp rather than ur midwife! glad everything is going well for u xx

I see my GP mostly now. They wanted to alternate but my MW is crap so now I just book into see the doctor. The only concern is that I might get her in the delivery suite and I don't know her very well but then I may well get any number of MW's I've never even met. As I see it, my GP is going to be caring for bubs when he's born (after the initial health visiting period) so it makes sense. Plus she seems to have her head screwed on, which helps.
