how to make a home

this might seem weird but does anyone without kids yet look around their house/apartment and think if i were growing up here would it feel like a home to me? i try so hard to keep my place clean and DH and I are not what you would call naturally neat ,but i know i have to get better before the baby is born. I have been working on it for months now and it is improving. aside from cleanliness what do you think makes a house look like a home? when i think back to my childhood.. i want my house to have home feeling like it did when i was a kid.

any thoughts... ( other than that im a bit of a loony)

Well, being back with my mum I'd say my house is pretty much the home it's always been. I can see what you mean though. I'm sure with lots of toys around the place it'll feel alot more like a kids home!

I think what makes it look like a home is adding personal touch, like pictures or ornaments of sorts...

Everyone has a different sense of style but when you add your own sense of style to you own home it makes it feel more like yours, not someone else.

Just my opinion though. I definately feel like my house is my home, and i'm forever cleaning the place. But thats just how i like it :-)

I keep lots of pictures out, which to me makes our apartment feel like home. Plus I'm very far away from most of my family and friends so it makes me happy to see their pictures every day

I know whatcha mean. With 4 cats and a dog, plus two not-very-organized adults living here it seems more like a clutter hole than a home! I've been trying to get and keep this house clean for the past 8 months, but...to no avail. Charlotte's room is coming along and that is helping, but I do kinda wonder how a baby is going to fit in with all the other stuff. I never really had a 'home' growing up. We'd moved 24 times by the time I was 24, so... I keep lots of pictures of family around and important knick knacks and that seems to help some.

A few clothes on the floor makes home to me

I hate things on the floor but when its clean and tidy it doesnt look lived in!

A home should look like it has people living in it and things going on (laundry, dished etc)
