nct antenatal class

Hiya, just wondered whether anyone has signed up to or is currently attending the nct antenatal classes??

My partner and I are considering attending, however at a price tag of £150/£189 we would like to make sure they're worth it!

Any opinions would be mucho appreciated

We were thinking they were too pricy, but then we thought about it and realised that as first time parents the one off NHS class might not be enough... I also thought it would get OH more involved in the birth. We used our HIP money for it.

We're signed up for them in February when I'll be about 33 weeks. Apart from the actual course info I'd heard from a few people that you meet lots of people in your area at the same sort of stage, which I desperately need because I've got no-one nearby really. Some people I've heard are great friends with the people they met there years later.

However we could afford to do them so it's really whether or not you can spare the cash. I've got no idea how good the content will be but I've heard good things so fingers crossed.

We went, they were very good and look at birth from a very holistic angle. Most of the couples where professional couples in their early to mid thirties. Me and OH where amongst the youngest there (me 29 and OH 28) and where the only ones not married!!!

We were lucky with the cost as we are on Working Tax Credit we got the course and membership for £15. I believe you can get some kind of discount if you have a yearly household income of less than £25k.

We went on them and had 3 breastfeeding sessions and a labour day - both absolutely brilliant. Informative, fun, got OH fully involved, even in the BF sessions. We've also met two other lovely couples who live nearby and have close due dates to us who we will stay in touch with. It isn't just what we got from the sessions that we found useful it's everything that comes afterwards: coffee mornings with other mums, activities for babies, nights out with other mums and lots more events. Our BF counsellor has also said that we can call her if we have any problems BFing and she is happy to come over to help. Yes it is pricey but I can honestly say that these sessions beat the NHS ones hands down. I've heard that some people have had good Parentcraft classes but unfortunately mine were terrible - our MW didn't even talk about labour!

So heartily recommended by me and my OH!

We went on a Refresher course as I have 2 kids already and I never attended any classes with those but we really enjoyed these. In fact yesterday was good as our antenatal teacher arranged for me and another girl who is due 9 days before me to attend a meeting of mums who had their babies 3 months ago, so that was good. We are also arranging to meet up once our LO's are here.
I joined to make new friends and the NCT send me a newsletter regularly to let me know what's going on in and around my area. Defo a good idea!

We're going and I love them. Cost was £175 but that includes a years membership to NCT which isn't compulsory (about £34 I think). We are both really enjoying them - finding out lots and meeting some lovely other mum's and dad's to be! x

i went on them they were good! i dint learn anything that i didnt already know from reading up on things i thought they would have a more alternative approach to labour ect but they didnt!

i wouldnt go again it was nice to meet other people but i was by far the youngest there they were all mid thrites professional couples!

if we have more children well be looking for hypnobirthing classes i think!

i was ntold you could still go to the bumps and babys meets even if you havent been to the classes! x

I phoned to enquire about them, but when I mentioned I'd be coming on my own (as I have a daughter already, so oh will be watching her) was told in no uncertain terms that they like it to be couples....now I'm not a single mum, but man I'd hate to have been with that reaction..I wanted to really go to meet other mums, price wasn't a problem, and didn't mind going on my own....ahh well !

I have been doing both nhs and nct antenatal classes. I have really enjoyed the nhs one's very down to earth and informative. I paid for the nct ones because lots of my friends recommended them as a way to meet other new parents to be and said they were good. However I have not enjoyed them as much. My partner could not make the breastfeeding session due to work commitments and I said I was quite happy to go on my own but was told that I might feel left out if he didn't attend, this upset me and I ended up not going to that session just went to the nhs one instead, at the time it also made me think what if I was a single mum? I think it is pot luck - who is in your group and what the teacher is like. The nct teacher is lovely it just doesn't seem to suit me.
