kicking - reassurance sought no scare stories

Hi there

Boy there are some real scary stories on these sites, am a newbie and just terrified myself even more by reading a few!

I am basically worried about my babies movement. I am 30 weeks and all my kicks are pretty low down (baby head down a few weeks ago) and very gentle. They seemed to get a bit stronger a couple of weeks ago and I could gurantee feeling lots of movement if I lay down quietly. This week however moves seem even more gentle and though I still feel the baby every day it will probably only be wee squirms and movements in the morning and a wee bit at night. Worries me to bits as I keep hearing about ladies who get kicked hard all the time (very envious of you all). Ended up at hospital on Tuesday as none of the normal tricks would work (water and lying still etc - after an hour of nothing I was so upset). They got out the doppler which revealed a healthy heartbeat and they sent me on my way. I sort of thought the kicks would get stronger and more frequent and higher - still worried!

Any ladies out there whose babies are pretty quiet or are experiencing anything similar. Seeking reassurance please try not to scare me!

Haze x

Hello and welcome to B&B!!

Try not to worry! Easier said than done I know!

What you need to remember is that it's 'movements' they ask you to monitor, not necessarily hard kicks! I've been into labour ward a couple of times for monitoring so I do know how you feel. As baby gets bigger you will notice a pattern. Mine has really wild days where she never stops and then other days I hardly feel a thing, sometimes they get comfy and don't want to move for a while!

If you're ever really worried though hun, always speak to MW or labour ward.

if your LO is head down then its probably punches that you feel and as head and shoulders grow there will be less room for hand movement, going to the hospital is the right move if you are worried about movments,
also the bigger they get the more uncomfortable the movements if my baby makes a big movement while im in bed then i wake up to it

I could of wrote your post. Kick counting is the most scary thing ever i think. I have gotten so stressed. My baby is also a light kicker. She is breach now but was just as quiet when she was head down. I get so scared when i hear that other babys kick so hard and mine dosent. She also has very quiet days . I get checked out a lot.Baby is always fine. As long as you get checked out when she is quiet. My midwife said that you need to get to no your pattern and thats what is normal.

I very rarely get big kicks. More like movements, or small kicks or punches that feel like a little muscle twitch. I think it's more important to try and see a pattern in their movements, but saying that my LO will have a really active day and then will be more quiet for a day or two. They do like to worry us!

When I was in for my scan yesterday I mentioned that my little one had been far less active the past two days. Normally I get beaten senseless but for two days I was just feeling little rolls here and there and barely any kicking, definitely not the 10 in one hour that they say to look for.

Well the midwives are all very good about getting you hooked up to a CTG monitor if you're worried about reduced movement. (I would call if you're at all worried!) So they hooked me up for 30 minutes. Baby's heartbeat was excellent. Everyone who walked by kept saying what an excellent trace it was. I was a bit worried as they give you a little button to push when you feel any movement at all.. it's more stressful than a hearing test where they tell you to push a button when you hear a beep!! You're sitting there thinking... "what was that? was that movement? ahhh! I don't know!"

However, they showed me the trace at the end and baby's heartbeat went up right before I hit the button every time. So it WAS movement. Despite being very gentle. (apparently a tiny raise in heartbeat with movement is exactly what they want to see.) They've told me that it's probably an increase in my fluid that's making baby's movements less forceful. That and her position since she's head down now.

But yeah, as long as you're feeling baby squirming around then all is probably good! (and it doesn't sound like just my hospital that is more than happy to have you in for monitoring, other posts from people on here seem to imply the same thing. They'd rather you err on the side of caution!)

Just backing up everyone else. My movements are feeling less and less strong now and she's getting too big to really wallop me. If you in any way concerned just pop off to the midwife/labour ward etc.
My LO has a couple of days of wriggling then I won't feel hardly anything for a whole day until i poke her hard enough to give her a bruise. lol. I'm sure she's going to come out black and blue I poke her sooo much!
