clexane injections

I was put on 40mg daily clexane injections when i was 11 weeks pregnant due to a previous DVT 3 years ago as a precaution, Now im close to the birth i want to stop taking them as im really worried about my labour whilst being on them, i know i wont be able to have a epidural which i dont like in itself and my doctor just said 'stop taking them when you think you will go into labour'.... how do i know when ill go into labour?

My worries are if the labour didnt run smoothly and turned into a emergancy c section would i bleed to death on the table! would i be put to sleep as i wouldnt be able to have a epidural, do i have to stay in hospital longer after the birth, i know these are all questions from my doctor but whenever ive asked they just say its such a small dose it wont be a problem but just sorta skips around the questions, im going to see my MW tomorow and will ask her then but i doubt she will let me stop taking them.

My risk factors have come down as well for having a DVT i have since lost 5 stone, stopped smoking and come of the pill (these were the reasons i had a dvt i think there was no blood clotting problems when they did tests) although i guess just having a dvt before is a risk factor along with pregnancy. Im so worried about it i dont know what to do,

anyone else been on or on these injections what advice have you been given regarding the birth.???

I know its not exactly the same, but I am on aspirin and had the same concern as yourself, I asked when I should stop taking it and was told to take it up to 36 weeks. I was concerned though as my last daughter was born at 34 weeks. I have the same worries as you, basically excessive bleeding, but the Obstetrician said that the risks of clotting in pregnancy far outweigh the risks of bleeding out . I was also told that if the worst came to the worst then they could administer clotting factors if necessary. Can you not ask to see your consultant rahter than your GP? xx

Sorry i know im not in 3rd tri but i was on anticoagulants before pg coz of 2 spontaneous DVTs (No reason for either of them) so when we came to TTC i already asked a lot of these questions. Basically do not take the Clexane when you think your labour has begun. It isnt the end of the world if youve taken your jab and then go into labour later in the day coz theres an antidote they can give you to thicken your blood again if it was a problem. They can also give you a drip to make your womb contractto reduce any chance of bleeding during and after the labour. Also is there any reason why you cant have an epidural coz i've been told I can have one if I choose to when the time comes and i'm on 100mgs of clexane twice daily so its quite a large dose!!!!

Hope this has helped a little and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy xxx

thanks for the replies well i am under consultant care as i have been put on the injections so i have to be but i havent actually seen a consultant at all thru my pregnancy the 1st appt he was on sum kind of course and the other doc decided to put me on 40mg daily as a precaution and every appt i have had since i have just seen a doctor not consultant and in any of my appts they touch very little on the injections just ask if im managing to adminstar them ok and say keep taking them, they havent checked my blood or anything.

I was told i wouldnt be allowed a epidural and ive read this on the internet. So if it turned into a csection i presume i would be put to sleep sumthing i dont want at all, its good to know they can give you sumthing to help clotting but i still feel like i want to stop taking them now, ive already gone further in this pregnancy than i did with my 1st and so every day im just on edge. I think ill ask my MW tomorow about stopping them.

I was on 80mg of clexane while pregnant due to my weight.

2nd pregnancy, i delivered fine, blood loss was minimal but i did have some retained placenta which required a d+c

I had a spinal and a section with 3rd pregnancy, i lost 800ml of blood which was a little over they wanted but was ok.

I needed iron but was fine.

The clexane will stopped 24 hours before your induced/sectioned. But if you go into natrual labour dont take it again untill after you have delivered.

Blood coagulates very quick, but they will measure loss so please dont worry.

V xxx

Epidurals

I took clexane during my first pregnancy and was told that I wouldn't be able to have an epidural within 12 hours of taking the clexane - as long as you don't inject when the contractions start you should be fine!

With regards to the epidural, it will depend on your anaesthetist. Current evidence seems to suggest that the risks are small, but it is the anaesthetists call and some just won't do it.
