cut/tear?

hiya, when i'm in labour... if they feel baby isn't coming out easily will they inform me of this and then make the decision themselves to cut me, or will they give me the chance to put try again once more? just wondering if being cut is a choice or forced on u? like do we have any chance to change what position were in to try n get the baby out ourselves - like im thinkin i would be really tense... so if they said we're gonna have to cut u if u can't get him out i'd have words with myself and do best to relax my legs n pelvic floor etc to avoid bein butchered (if baby was distressed i am fully happy to be cut) jus worryin about being cut, think its cos im imagining a mass butchering happenin down there obviously not ever seen a cut that i can remember lol... so picturing a horror story - like i say i will happily go thru it to see my son bouncy happy n healthy but jus a bit anxious xx

I'm not sure what they'll advise to be honest but after alot of reading up and thought, i've decided I want the midwives to avoid a cut at all costs and help me to avoid tearing by advising me on the best positions to avoid tearing and guiding me through the labour and pushing stages as much as poss

Apparently it can be better to have a minor tear rather than be cut as cuts tend to go through muscle and tears may only go through skin and sometimes don't even need stitches unlike a cut!

I will allow to be cut if its absolutly necesarry otherwise I'd rather just tear naturally

make sure you make your choices known though so they know what you want and what your happy with

x

Hey, I tore on my first and was advised they would automatically cut for this birth, but I don't want that. My previous tear has to be stitched back up in surgery, but wasn't really painful and healed well.

Try perinial massage from 34 weeks I think? to help the area stay plyable and make sure & tell ur midwife (or put in your birth plan) that you would like to avoid !

I was wondering this too, I'd hope the mw's would be experienced enough to advise to change position if possible or to at least ask/warn you! I presume that they will fingers crossed

I think they have to ask you before they cut. Personally I would rather be cut than tear - if neither can be avoided by changing position etc. At least there is some control over where exactly the cut will be - and also it will be easier to stitch up I imagine. But to answer your question... No, I don't think they can just go all Eddie Scissorhands without your permission.

They have to obtain consent before cutting. Personally in most circumstances I'd rather tear, however there are circumstances where episiotomy might be the more appropriate choice, so always best to be informed before the actual birth so you understand why it's being advised.

they wont just cut you hun, and ypou can refuse and go for the tear if you want - but the cut may actually be the lesser of 2 evils so i would just go with the midwifes advise - i am fully expecting to be cut coz i was with the first and tore with the second

I was given an episiostomy without even knowing but my baby was in distress and it ended up as a forceps delivery. It's all healed up nicely now, I was adament I didn't want to be cut but in my situation your birth plan goes straight out of the window. Looking back it's not that bad.

I was cut and I tore! I wasn't aware of either happening until I asked as she stitched me up! I had an epi and had to have a forceps delivery so I guess it was unavoidable.

I think if I were to have another I'd rather ve cut if I had to. My tear is much sorer than the cut now.

A cut is preferable to you tearing into your back passage - 4th degree tears are not great and can cause issues with bowel control permanently. You would only be given an episiotomy if you need one, and of course, as with any procedure, you would have to give your consent.
