with my first LO they cut me without asking or me knowing it until they were stitching me and I asked what she was doing and with my second LO I had a 2nd degree tear and asked if they were going to cut me but my Dr refuses to cut so I tore but I got to say with both experiences I seem to have healed quicker this time but dont know if that has anything to do with it...I didnt feel it either time because I had the epidural so it didnt bother me at the time it happened

AGREE AGREE... I was very lucky with my 1st mw advised a cut ,as bubs head was a little stuck..
she slipped out easy ... but my sister in law tore in both of her births right to her ass.. and has had loads of probs since ... loads ... really not good.. uck ... but be strong and try to stay in control ,, and if ur in no position to ask make sure ur birthing partner questions everything .. that is happening.. my mom did for me and was sooooo grateful too her .. as i was screaming for an epi at the last minute the annthethstist came in and was all ready to go ahead.. but i couldn't sit still .. lol .. and mom said leave it as i was soo far dilated and as they had put me on a drip to speed it up .. i may not need it and as bloody always .. mom was right .. but she did have the midwife grilled .. lol xxx

I don't think they automatically tell you. From what I've heard, mothers realise after the birth they've been cut or tore! Technically, they should ask for your consent but I guess it wouldn't be practical if they had to ask consent for every single medical procedure!

Best thing is to tell your MW/doc what your position on cutting/tearing is so that they know they can/cannot automatically do it. Personally I'd like to avoid an episiotomy so I also ask my OH to be on the watch for any suspicious "scissor action"!

my understanding is that they wait until the head is on the verge of being born so that they can see how much the perinium is stretched. If it's likely to tear or baby likely to get stuck then they will make the decision to perform an episiotomy at this point. Probably a little difficult to ask for consent at this stage I'd imagine.

My Midwive's told me that they won't cut unless baby is in distress and needs to come out superfast. Apparently my hospital will just let things happen naturally.

u ill be informed of anything they have to or want to do during labour so dont worry.

zane wasnt coming out at all so she asked me to push one more time and she then said i dont want to cut u but im going to have to as baby cant come out.

i then said if u dont cut will i tear and she said yes, i was very impressed with how she delt with it, so she went thru it step by step and cut me.

i was terrified about bein cut but it was fine after that zane came out so fast.

stitches are a b*tch but worth it to get baby out and help stop the risk of a bad tear

They DONT ask consent in an emergancy. And if you have an assisted delivery you will have an episiotomy.

must just be different hospitals do things differently then.

my hopsital is terrible but inform the woman of what they need to do before its done like they did for me and my friend who had a very difficult birth but they still told her what was being done and why
