breast pumps

im going out to buy my labour bag today and was thinking about whether theres anything for baby i dont have and i realised-breast pump. Now how important are these (sorry if i sound ridiculous) but are they vital?? I wanted to get one so OH could BF him and feel like hes bonding too? But then i keep reading about babies getting confused between nipple and bottle teat?

Someone asked this at my last antenatal class and midwife says baby will not get mixed up - if you are breast feeding most of the day and its just maybe during the night then its no problem.

I have got the Tommee Tippee Manual Pump - got it for £10 - its supposed to be the best manual one although I know electric ones are said to be best. I plan to use it only rarely.

They are not essential. You shouldnt really be pumping before your supply is established really, which takes a month to 6 weeks on average. Using bottles can cause nipple confusion. If you want the best chance of BFing successfully, just wait a while. You have to learn to crawl and then walk before you can run

Daddy's can do lots of things to bond with their LOs besides feeding them. Bathing, changing and taking them while you rest to name but a few. You often find that Daddy's are very good at settling babies too. My OH would take my LO in the early days and walk around the house talking to her and singing to her while I had a rest and a bath or nap. Feeding them is just a tiny part of bonding with Daddy

I used the Tommee Tippee one with Evie and the bottles (recommended to me by the neonatal nurses). As Evie was prem I had to express from the start, but as soon as she was strong enough I used to breastfeed as well. She didnt get confused and it worked well for us, maybe I was just lucky . xx

I wouldn't buy one prior to birth. There's always the risk BF will not work for you (although I wish it will work, of course!) and then it will just be wasted money... Plus, I don't think you should be expressing in the first few days/weeks as it sometimes takes time for baby (and for you) to get comfortable with breastfeeding.

You can always send daddy buy one in the first weeks following birth if you feel you need one! As Mervs mum says, there are plenty of ways for daddy to bond with his LO and giving a bottle is just one of them!

This neonatal nurse doesn't believe in "nipple confusion," and you'll find a lot of us that don't.

It won't hurt to have a pump on hand, but with a well baby it really is best to establish breastfeeding first and then introduce bottles later on if you still want to.

My opinion was there is really no need to get one before birth, tesco and other places sell them so can easily get one after. However, I got the Tommee Tippee manual one for £7 in TK Makk one day, have left it all in the wrap, figured it can go on ebay if I don't use it.

My MW said at ante natal that they lend the electric ones from the clinic so that is maybe an option.

So I would suggest not getting one unless you see a good bargain.

I'm not getting one until I know BF is well established. This is what my MW and antenatal class teacher advised. Plan on getting the Tommee Tippee one, just not sure if to go for the manual or be a bit of a lazy bum and splurge on the electric . Am reluctant to spend so much money on an electric one if I find BF easy and don't need to express as much. xx
