Question about Medication?

Ladies-

They have prescribed me to take Brethine to slow down/stop the contractions. Has anyone else started taking this at 32 weeks? Is anyone else taking this right now? I just wondered the effects it has on the baby and myself and if it is safe. Thanks!

Can't really help you with that, but I'm guessing they surely know what they're doing and wouldn't prescribe something that isn't safe for you or baby!!!

I was put on daily nifedipine instead but I do know many of our patients are put on it and go on to have healthy near term/term babies. Some people say they feel an increase in heart rate but if your at home resting it should be fine. I've only had it in injection form and didn't notice any side effects. If you have any questions about the medication the pharmacist thats provides you with the medication has lots of useful information. They've always been good on answering my questions about the medications I've been prescribed during pregnancy and how it will affect my LO and me. I've found talking to the pharmacist helps more then the doctor sometimes because they explain everything about the drug. Hope that helps

I had the brethine injections in the hospital. They made my pulse race really fast. Once I went home on bed rest they switched me to Procardia. It makes me feel like crap, but I know that the baby has to cook longer. I talked to the pharmicist and they said it was OK to take (both are class C...which I'm not extremely comfortable with). It just makes me nervous?? You're a teacher too, right? I wonder if that many kids just bring on pre-term labor? LOL!!!

Haha! Yeah, I'm a teacher for the younger kids, so maybe you are right! They definitely wear me out, that's for sure. I'm on maternity leave now, though...so I should be much more relaxed! The doctor did prescribe me the Brethine, but she changed how I should take it. Instead of around the clock every 6 hours, I'm only to take it once I feel cramps or any backaches or such. Taking it then should stop anything that was beginning to start. This way, my body won't become addicted to it or something like that. I just said ok and haven't had the need to take it since Wednesday morning. It really does make my heart race and I hate that feeling!
