Iron tablets making me very ill

I've been put on iron tablets because my iron was very low in my last blood test.. Since taking them I've been having really really bad stomach cramps and bad diarrhea too (sorry tmi)

They're making me feel so unwell

I've called the doctor for some advise but I've got to call back at 1230 to speak to the one who takes the antenatal appointments...

Sorry ur feeling so crappy hun, hope u feel better soon xx

You may find that they can give u a different type of iron tablet to help as i know there a few different types. I always find i get the opposite problem and end up constipated when taking mine.

I've heard that taking them with a glass of OJ is supposed to help.

Maybe split it in half, and take it that way? One at lunch and one a dinner, so it is not so much on your tummy at once.

Urgh, Sorry to hear you're having a hard time with your iron levels... I use liquid supplements called spartone - you can pick it up in health food stores or in some supermarkets like Tesco. My midwife reccomended it because I had trouble with iron tablets; You take spartone with fruit juice because on its own it tastes horribly irony and also the vitamin C in the fruit juice helps your system to absorb the iron. Spartone is a good way to get the iron that you need because it's better (quicker and easier and in greater quantities) absorbed into your system than iron supplements in tablet-form and it doesn't cause all those nasty tummy problems. I'd definately reccomend trying it if you've had enough of your iron tablets. It costs about £6 for a box of 14 sachets and you need to take 2 a day. It's slightly pricey but worth it, I'd say, to get your iron levels up without the hastle and ickyness that come with iron tablets.

Best of luck, hun.

I was told that they can make you feel very sick if you take them without eating. I always take mine after having something to eat, and I've been ok. I actually have had more energy, and feel much better. Hope it gets better hun!
