Yep kelly's got it spot on. I would imagine your MW is referring to BOTH levels being low. That is, you have a low hemoglobin value AND a low hematocrit level.
Just a few things to remember. Taking vitamin C along with your iron supplement will help you absorb more iron. Yes, taking iron tends to be constipating, so take the metamucil or make sure you have plenty of water and fiber in your diet.
And things like coffee, tea, egg yolks, milk and soy protiens limit the amount of iron absorbed by your body. Limit these foods to get the most out of your iron supplement.
