28 week bloods

Hi All,

I had my 28 week bloods taken by the midwife last week (Even though im not 28 weeks till thursday)
But I had a call from my doc tonight saying they have a prescription for me as my blood results have come back that I am aneamic..

I thought my diet was ideal though - Everything we eat is freshly made even down to the sauces for spag bol and chili etc etc and I eat looooads of veg and red/white meat so I am a bit shocked at the result although relieved a bit as I have been feeling sooooooooo crap this time and so so so so tired with banging headaches (Apparantly all symptoms) so at least I can stop thinking i am being a wimp now...

My question is has anyone else had theirs come back with this? as I have read a few articles on it now which have worried me a bit saying this could cause severe blood loss at delivery or pre-term labour etc etc..

Thanks for reading xx

I think its really common hun, theres lots of threads about it if you do a quick search.

I was aneamic and started on iron tablets at about 32 weeks, by 36 my levels were back to normal.

Try not to worry too much hun x

I needed iron tablets in both of my previous pregnancies and both were a day late and normal deliveries, don't worry its quite common at some point in your pregnancy x

It is more common in pregnancy regardless of diet.

What bloods were low?

I am on folic acid, b12 and iron a the moment as all my bloods are either to high or to low. Try not to worry about what u read, they will monitor it for u, and a lot can be done to push them back up

Anaemia is really common in pregnancy, so don't worry! If you dont get on with the tablets though, let the doc know and they can try a different form.
I got a phone call from the docs to come in for my results - was a bit worried and couldn't get appointment for a week. I got there to be told my white cells were high, and that this was normal in late pregnancy doh!

As everyone else has said this is pretty common in pregnancy. In spite of a v iron rich/vitamin C heavy diet, I've been anaemic since 24 weeks (35 now) and on iron tablets 3 x a day since then. I'm being monitored to see if I'lll need an iron infusion over the next couple of weeks.

I'm also in the middle of a course of B12 injections as my bloods are also low in that (which isn't helping overall anaemia situation) and post-baby will have investigations to see if it's pernicious anaemia rather than pregnancy related - am assuming it's pregnancy thing though.

I flit in and out of anaemia even when not pg and think that sometimes diet alone isn't enough to give our bodies the boost we need.

Hopefully iron tablets will sort you out and you'll feel better soon.
