I've bought some but as the above posted said, not sure if you actually need them. I'll be packing one of mine 'just in case' but can't say i'll be using it - if that makes sense?

Oh I hadn't thought about this. I've bought a few dummies but wasn't planning on using them for the first month or so....I have no clue why or how I came up with that though!!

Think I read somewhere you shouldn't introduce a dummy until breastfeeding is well established...

No harm on chucking them in your bag if you already have them. Some babies get real comfort from suckling on something, you might find your baby already sucks its thumb....personally I'd rather it was sucking on a dummy.

They say it can cause problems with BFing...I'm planning on FFing so haven't really looked into that. When I was born the midwives pleaded with my mum to give me a dummy because I wouldn't stop crying (sorry mum!) I was breastfed and never had any probs xx

I didn't with my son, we were only in over night after being born, and he only had 2 beastfeeds in that time - he was so sleepy he never really needed one.

I do have some for this lil one, maybe i'll chuck one in the bag just in case. Am gonna breast feed initially but probably switch for ff after a couple of weeks, like i did with nathan.

Red face

Hi,

I am planning not to bring a dummy to the hospital at least, but probably will use one when the baby is a bit older. My parents never did manage to wean me off my thumb

The advice from UNICEF and the Baby Friendly Guidelines are that if you want to breastfeed the baby shouldn't be offered a dummy or teat until breastfeeding is well established (about 6 weeks of age). The idea behind that reccomendation is possible 'nipple confusion' - that the baby will get used to the plastic teat and not attach to the breast so well. Some baby's seem to experience this and others can manage both techniques from day 1 no problems. Unfortunately you can't see beforehand which type of baby you've got

For those planning to bottle feed a dummy is certainly a possibility because most babies get all their milk fast from the bottle, then still want to suck longer even though they're no longer hungry.

Of course, in the end this is entirely your decision

All the best,
Goosie
