I know a lot of women want to have a natural birth, but it's unfair to make ceasarean seem like such a horrible option. The doctor told me that I can choose between breech birth and ceasarean - I felt no pressure whatsoever from any midwife, consultant or doctor to have a c. But for me, I've always been afraid of childbirth and now with a big, breech baby, if he doesn't turn, I'm not going to put myself through the worry and pain of trying. After reading up on both, I feel now that the healing and downsides of natural and ceasarean birth wind up about the same, so when I give birth, I'll be happy with whichever one is best for me at the time.
Ceasarean's have been used for hundreds of years (at least) and nowadays, it's a lot safer than it used to be. For some women, it means childbirth doesn't have to be something you dread for 40 weeks. I just wanted to say all this because previous comments in the forums made me feel that I was wrong to choose ceasarean as a way out and other women who consider it shouldn't feel forced to try a natural birth. Worry about the birth shouldn't ruin the pregnancy, or looking forward to meeting your child. |
That's very true tough, but for a lot of women especially in the US, a natural vaginal birth is something that a lot of healthcare professionals HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN IN TOTAL. They either want to perform a cecerean because of liability concerns (not maternal or neonatal concerns per se) or they want to induce labor according to a dr. or hospital SCHEDULE. How fair is that to mama and baby when it's a natural process to begin with.
Nearly one in three labors in the US is a ceserean. That is shocking to me.
I often think of it as a natural process like eliminating your bowels. I don't want someone forcing an enema on me just because they don't like when my body is ready to make a doo.
Obviously your case is very different AND IT IS THE WAY CESEREANS ARE supposed to be performed. For situations where mom or baby has true issues and their health is the primary factor - that is right and proper for the healthcare professional to discuss the alternative birthing options. But you and I both hear on the boards where women have visited their MW or HCP and have been told some wonky thing like "your baby is too big, you may consider ceserean (after a mere fundal height check!???)
Ceserean is an option, and a AWESOME AND SAFE OPTION but I'm not sure it should be performed to the tune of one in three births.
www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com is now streaming on Netflix. This is an awesome documentary on the birthing process in the US, and how women are almost removed from their own birthing due to the BUSINESS of birth. If you don't want to stream the entire documentary, just have a look at the trailer. Pretty insightful.
Anyway, I'm thankful that you have a HCP that is willing to work with you, your body AND your baby in getting your baby born healthy and safely, he's not forcing you into any birth options that suit his needs or schedule more than yours.
