Ok Ladies - I need your advice

First of all, if any of you don't know already, I have horrible excema. Which never used to be horrible until I became pregnant. It has gotten to the point where it is all over the backs of my hands, my stomach, and my arms. It not only itches, but is embarrassing as I'm a teacher and students constantly shy away from me thinking I have some flesh-eating disease.

Since it has gotten so bad, I decided to go to the doctor. (Dermatologist and OB) My dermatologist prescribed me Topicort Lotion to use before bed and in the morning and Atarax (pill) to take before bed to relieve the itching while I sleep. He told me these medications would not affect my baby. Well, me being the worry-wart that I am, went in to see my OB. I asked if the dermatologist was right about it not affecting my baby or causing birth defects or anything such. She said she would check them out and give me a call. She called a little while ago to tell me that these medications were safe to take and to take them according to my dermatologist. She assured me over and over they were ok to take.

So why am I still hestitant to start using this lotion and taking this pill at night? What would you do in my situation? The excema is bad, painful, and embarassing. And even though I have the reassurance that it wouldn't harm my LO, I'm still hesitant. Any advice will help! Thanks ladies!

Your OB would never tell you something is safe if it's not 100% safe for baby! There are some medications that are safe being taken while pregnant. If you are suffering and embarrassed, you should take them.

I know how you feel about wanting everything to be safe for baby, but sometimes you also have to think about you !!! Also, your OB said they're safe, so there is nothing to be worried about

My Advice...

Hello Jenny
If your eczema is causing you discomfort I would definately use the lotion and take the tablets. Hopefully it will relive the pain and itching and as a result help you to feel more comfortable and relaxed. Perhaps for peace of mind you could keeps notes of any changes to your symptoms. I hope you feel more comfortable soon.
P.S. My daughter, Nina Grace is due to day before your little princess.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
Best Wishes
Julie

Skin conditions can be really painful and it sounds like you are miserable. I suffer from Psoriasis so I understand where you are coming from. If I were you, I would take the prescribed medication. You have taken all the steps you needed to make sure that the baby would not be harmed. If both doctors gave you the go ahead, I would take them especially since you are in pain and embarassed. I know you don't want to hurt the LO, but you also need to take care of yourself. It's not going to get any better, in fact, it can only get worse if you don't start using that medicine. If you're still uneasy, get a second opinion to make sure that it won't harm LO. I hope you heal soon sweetie. Your OB said it's okay to use your medicine, I would put your trust in them that they would not lie to you. Feel better soon.

Yeah, I would definately use the medication you've been given, if your OB has said their safe then they'll be safe. You must be going through hell just now with your eczema.
My skin is extremely dry and itchy too, not as bad as what yours sounds but it must look like i've got fleas or something cause I'm always scratching.
I hope that your meds calm it down for you.

Just noticed, we've got the same name, Jennifer Lyn, cool.

as a sufferer of eczema i would advise you to take the medication your dermatologist has offered. They would not give you anything to harm your baby, and since it has been double checked i would deffinately take it as i know the itching can be unbearable.

They will not give you anything that will harm your baby so rest assured and accept the help you have been given. I hope it eases your itching and redness hun as it can be really distressing

Maybe just start out with the lotion and see how that goes. I don't blame you for your hesitation, it is natural.

Thanks so much for the advice ladies! I got the prescription filled and will take the first dosage tonight. How come when we become pregnant we turn into extreme worriers? Ha! Everything everyone said made sense and hopefully by taking this medication it will relieve the discomfort I'm in!
