I had a tear/ cut and they had started to stitch me back up but after labour they had to take me to theatre to manually remove my placenta, and the young male doctor told me he would "put my bum back together" So I had stitches but didn't feel anything due to the spinal they gave me in labour and afterwards I refused to look but I hd no problems with them.

Yeah, that's why I'm practising the perineal massages too. I'm still confused as to whether it's better to tear or be cut, though? Some docs make it seem like it's best to have the episiotomy, but other books I've read said that tearing naturally is better. Does anyone know?

I had a 4th degree tear. They loaded me up on stool softeners so going to the bathroom was not really an issue. Going pee was a little more difficult but still not painful, just awkward. Maybe TMI but for the first 3-4 weeks I found it the easiest to pee in the shower. I know it is nasty but really what can you do.

I have had some problems but will not get into detail about it.

For peace of mind... I had a 10.5 lb baby that was HUGE. Most of you ladies will not have a huge baby so you will probably get away with water births. If you do have a tear, I doubt it will be too bad.

Just wanted to let you know that there are some of us out here who have experienced the 4th degree tear. I survived. The tear itself was not painful just took a long time to "heal".

i had an episiotomy and ventouse. I didnt feel a thing as i had an epidural. however i did feel afterwards. it hurt to pee and i was scared to go poo as i thought my stiches were gona rip apart. so had a few tearful moments there but of course they didnt split. It felt a little tight as it was healing but apart from that i didnt have too much worry. once it had healed though i had problem that when i had sex, the area kept becoming inflamed and very sore. so after a year of complaining to the doc and not enjoying sex because of it, i was transferred to a hospital in london that dealt specfically with this type of problem. However, weirdly enough, it cleared up and i never had to go

Hope this time that if i tear or have to be cut again, it goes a little more smoother as the year afterwards was the very extremely unpleasant part and dont wish to repeat all that over again.

Me and OH are gona start that massage business in the next week or so to try and prevent it.
