Question

Swollen face

Have just noticed that in the past few hours my face has swelled up quite a bit. My hands are looking puffier too. Any reasons for this and do you think its anything to worry about?

Thought i'd check with you guys first cos my MW only works thursdays and didn't want to bother the hospital if it was nothing

I had some swelling in my face when I was at the hospital but its been mostly my feet and ankles that have been getting the brunt of it. Having puffy hands is normal too. I found this at baby center though.

When should I be concerned about swelling?
A certain amount of edema is normal in the ankles and feet during pregnancy. You may also have some mild swelling in your hands.

Call your midwife or doctor if you notice swelling in your face or puffiness around your eyes, more than slight swelling of your hands, or excessive or sudden swelling of your feet or ankles. This could be a sign of preeclampsia, a serious condition.

Also call your caregiver if you notice that one leg is significantly more swollen than the other, especially if you have any pain or tenderness in your calf or thigh.

Maybe you should give them a call just in case? hope all is ok

If it is very noticable, hun you should phone the hospital. Don't ever worry about bothering the hospital - Your health always has to come first - and that includes your peace of mind, so if you want to check something's okay it's always a good idea to drop them a call.

You should get this checked out anyway, because I don't want to worry you but while some swelling is normal in pregnancy, very noticable swelling can be a sign of preeclampsia - especially in the face and hands.

Hope it's not anything serious - do let us know how it goes with the hospital

Definitely call your MW. Sometimes swelling of the face, hands, and feet can be a warning sign of pre-eclampsia. Best to call and get your mind at ease.
