Do problems appear *after* 20 weeks?

Question ladies,

I have been having bad pains in my sides and lower back for over a week, and mentioned it on my regular visit to the doctor yesterday. At the time, he said the baby felt fine, was head down and in a good position and very big.

Today we go in for an emergency ultrasound to make sure things are ok, and the ultrasound tech won't tell us a thing. I am trying to figure out if his skull and brain measurements are normal and if he is ok and she keeps saying "I can't tell you that."

My question, since I am starting to freak out a little bit, is that we have already had two ultrasounds and a slew of blood work done. Since this is a high-risk pregnancy they have done extra testing since week 13, though we haven't had an ultrasound since week 20. If there was a serious problem or deformity they would have let us know before now wouldn't they? Deformities and other problems can't just crop up after 20 weeks - or can they? I'm so worried right now and we don't see our doctor again until next Wednesday.

I'm just trying to ease my mind a bit. Anyone have any advice?

Well, to be fair, ultrasound techs aren't doctors so they don't necessarily even know what's going on. The best they could give is an educated guess. In this situation I would stay calm, as stress is only going to add conflict to your life and is unhealthy for yourself and baby. I'm sure the doctors will let you know of any problems that might show up, as this is your baby, they have no right to keep them secret! I'm also pretty sure that if they had noticed anything abnormal in your earlier scans they would have told you about them already.

After all that, my thoughts are with you hun! Try to think positive.
