When do you get told babys position and weight??

Hello All,

I was just wondering at what point does the midwife check you and say 'well baby is breech at the mo' or 'well baby is in the right position' etc????

Also, other than by having a scan, can they guess babys weight just by bump size etc?? and at usually how many weeks do they start to guess??

Although i have had no problems at all with the midwifes ive seen i have been given no info what so ever!!!

Thanks all,

xxx

they will probably start noting the babies position from about now for you, but they won't be too concerned if it is breech as there is still so much time for that to change.

As for telling you weight, they probably won't mention it unless your fundal height is consistently too big or little from now on. then you will have a growth scan. It's not routine to check size, although when they examine position of baby later on they will check that babies head isn't too large to engage into your pelvis by feeling.

that's been my experience anyway....

My mw said she didn't need to know the baby's position until 34 weeks. Other people seem to get told earlier.

they checked the position of my baby at 34 weeks, she had been head down for a while and they had told me that but the official check was now as before that she could have moved anyway

They started noting Imis position at about 30 weeks And we were not told an estimate of weight despite fortnightly scans as it is just that, an estimate and more often than not proved wrong (very wrong in some cases!)

Hi

I was told that they won't start to look at position until 36 weeks although she had a guess at my 31 week appointment from where the heartbeat was.

iv been told babys posistion from 26 weeks but that was just because i asked my MW said they dont bother with how there laying untill 34 weeks and then if there breech they'll start worrying! I can tell exactly now how hes laying anyway so i dont really need a midwife too tell me! as for the weight when i was pg with charlie they never once told me how much they thought he was going too weigh just "big" 8lb11oz when he was born so i guess they were right my midwife also told me she'd be supprised if i was still pregnant at 40 weeks and well i was untill 40+5

My midwife only really started checking the position of my baby at my last appointment - my 31 week appointment. She said the baby is in head down position but not yet engaged but she will be checking at my later appointments to see how much the baby is engaged etc. She said it doesnt matter too much at this stage because there is still alot of time for the baby to change, just because baby is head down now doesnt mean she will stay that way but I hope she does lol.

My midwife has been measuring my stomach from the top of my stomach to the top of my pubic bone which I presume is the estimated height of the baby - she said my baby was measuring 31cm at 31 weeks which she said is perfect as they expect you to be pretty much the size of the weeks you are.

About the weight of the baby - I dont think in the UK they can tell you how much the baby weighs unless you go for growth scans which I have not been told I will be having any of. I think they just have a feel of the baby and just estimate the size from that. I think in America they get told the weight, would be nice to know!

I feel the same as you really - I've had no problems with midwifes but it doesnt seem like they tell you much of what to expect with regards to what they will be checking in your appointments. I havent even been weighed since my very first appointment when I found out I was pregnant - does everyone else get weighed at their appointments?? I thoght they would do that really to make sure you are not gaining/loosing too much but they just never had which I thought was strange. My midwife appointments just seem to be very quick and to the point to be honest.

At my MW appointment last week she tried to check positions but its harder with twins - I was 26 weeks. I got told weights at my 23 weeks scan - just realised this is no good to you as twins get different care - oops sorry.
