21 weeks - Big Baby with extra large head!

Hello!!! I am 21 weeks and my scan today showed that bubs is actually measuring 22 to 23 weeks in size. Bubs has a big head too (ouch!) and because bubs is bigger than normal, I'll need to be re-scanned at 32 weeks and possibly 36 weeks.

This is my first pregnancy. I am relatively small, so as you can imagine...I'm a bit worried about labour!!! I also keep imagining giving birth to a weird baby that is totally out of proportion! lol.

I asked if bubs growth will slow down and I was told it will more likely continue and I will just have a big baby.

I was wondering if any of you ladies are experiencing this??? Did your bubs measure big....and is it still measuring big now that you are approaching your due date??? Or has the size of your bubs gone back to normal???

I appreciate your replies! xx

You sound EXACTLY like me! Honest. At our gender scan, 18 weeks, we were measuring almost 21 weeks and he was in the upper percentile for heads!!!

Good news: My LO is very proportional. I had a growth scan at 36 weeks. His not long, just a big baby, but not out of proportion. I go for another scan Wednesday which is 38 weeks.

Bad news: I'm also small framed and with him measuring big, we're probably going to have a c-section. Sad, but it's what best for him and me.

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more!!!

Thanks MommaBunni!!! I was sort of hoping bubs might shrink some before the due date....but maybe not! lol. I'm scared to have a c-section. This might sound dopey, could they not induce so we have the baby earlier while it is a little smaller? Or is that not healthy to do so?

I'm about to toddle off to bed, but I'll PM you tomorrow!!

Hopefully there may be others out there who have had big babies turn into normal sized babies???

Firstly a couple of weeks isnt THAT much ahead. Up to 2 weeks variation is normal, especially earlier on. At your stage mine was measuring SEVEN weeks ahead....he now measures three weeks ahead. Im suprised they have even suggested a further scan when there is only 1 or 2 weeks difference between your EDD and measurements unless there is some form of medical issue.
Its very very likely that over the next 10 weeks the growth will level out, even if baby stays one or two weeks ahead I cant see them inducing or doing a section unless, as said above, there is another issue...but then if there is Id have thought you would have already been told you probably couldnt give birth naturally.

They will only induce if baby is extremely big, usually then its related to Gestation Diabetes. By extremely big I am talking in excess of 11/12lbs depending on the mother. They will not normally suggest a C section (in the UK, as US is section happy) unless it is physically impossible for you to give birth to the baby or there would be an extreme risk to you and/or baby if you tried.

You also have to remember that the measurements can be wrong.....

Thanks anothersquish. I appreciate your reply.

I understand that babies all vary and this will especially be different if measuring the fundal height. I believe they want to see me again and double check it closer to the date because three out of the four different body measurements by ultrasound were out of and clearly above the normal range...which I guess make them slightly on the extreme size?

I did ask if it meant they might revise my due date..but was told dating scans are much more accurate the earlier they are done.

Were you measured by ultrasound when you were told you wer 7 weeks ahead? Wow. I assume that you've been offered additional scans too then? I am glad to hear it does/can level out a little bit.

I was measured by ultrasound at 21 weeks (same as you) and thats when he measured on ALL four measurements as 28 weeks. My fundal height has always been spot on for my dates. I have had three further growth scans since to monitor his growth plus a GTT at 27 weeks (which was perfectly normal) I have a further growth scan at 33 weeks and may well have another at 36 weeks depending on what the measurements are.

Its very likely that yours will level out over the coming weeks, they do go through spurts of growth especially between 20 and 30 weeks so try not to worry about it.

Thanks! What is a GTT??

Have you been recommended that you may need a c-section? My hopital has a high c-section rate which scares me.

Hi, a GTT is a glucose tolerance test, it's what they do to see if you have gestational diabetes.

I had my scan at 23 weeks (they tried at 20 but the sonographer kindly told me I was too fat to have it then....before I'd even sat down!)

Anyway at 23 weeks my baby was big....not sure by how many weeks, but all measurements (except the legs) were above the 95th percentile.

I've had further scans at 28 and 32 weeks and he hadn't showed signs of slowing down!! I've got another scan booked for 36 weeks.

I'm not too worried as at 5ft 11 I think I can handle giving birth to a big baby (plus apparently bigger babies cope better with labour and often come quicker! I'm hoping that's right!)

As anothersquish said they won't induce early unless you have other medical issues (GD or SPD) but if your still concerned say after your 32w scan and baby is still shoeing as big you could always ask for a consultant app to put your mind at ease.

That is exactly what I did....I'm seeing the consultant at half 3....as I have gallstones and it's causing me a lot of pain (I can't have the gallbladder removed until after buba is here) I'm going to ask if they'd consider this a medical issue and agree to induce on my due date if need be.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks Boomer! Good luck at your appointment and do let me know.

Yes! My bubs has measured above the 95 percentile for all except for the legs too. That is interesting but good that they have you back at 28 weeks to check again.

I think I will enquire about GTT or getting tested for GD!! Can this be tested at any stage, because I thought I read it could only be tested past 23 weeks?

Am wondering if I cut back on my carbs (as I do eat alot) if that will make any difference. What do you think?

Yeah I'm sure you can ask to be tested....I think they do it at 26 - 28 weeks roughly.

They tend to only do it if you have diabetes in the family or you have a BMI over 30. My BMI is 35 and I had to push for the test (silly MW!) but deffo ask Hun.

I know of at least 10 women on here tho that are having growth scans and have big babies, but don't have GD....apparently bigger babies are becoming more common!
