ECV - External breech turning - any experience?

Hi,

Going to consultant next week to discuss ecv for breech baby. Not a happy bunny and have semi decided not to do this. Deciding factor was osteo explaining that they tried it on her (4 minutes only and decided it was stuck so she had c section), BUT, was performed in a room, off the operating theatre - with everything ready to go incase bubs got distressed. Also said they injected her uterus with a relaxant.

As my mum said, if the risk is so low - why go to the lengths of having everything ready in case bubba becomes distressed??

Anyway, as it's increasingly likely I'm going to be offered this, I was wondering if anyone has had a good experience with it?

I am mostly likely to be offerd this after my appointment with the midwife this thursday coming, baby has been breech all way thru and he hasnt turned at all since my appointment 2 week ago, im definitly not going to have the ECV because of the risks and because it will be stressful for the baby, its not even 100% going to work and baby could end up turning back anyways so im not going to put him or myself thru it. If baby wont turn on his own im going to have to have a c-section.. id prefer to have a date set for the c-section than to try and turn him and have to end up having an emergancy one because hes distressed.. my midwife didnt really tell me much about it just that they would use a muscle relaxor and try and turn baby but i looked up on the internet and iv decided against it 100% x

Thanks Natlee - that's exactly what I thought - and it occured to me that it was my first step at protecting my little bubba. I'd actually rather be cut open than have any harm come to her. Funny - sh'es not even here yet, but there's no way I want her manhandled! Glad I'm not being neurotic!!

I had an ECV with my son. They didnt inject me with a relaxant, they put a hormone patch on my stomach. It took consultant 2 or 3 minutes and my baby turned. It wasnt a particularly bad experience but dont think i would have it done again if this baby is breech. My son was very distressed during labour and had some problems at birth. Although there is nothing to suggest the ECV caused it i couldnt take that risk again.
xx

forgot to add, went in to labour 12 days after he was turned - not as he was being turned!

ive decided against it if Ava's not turned by my next me appt, ill get a scan to see her exact position but if i get offered this i will decline. Its too stressfull and apparently hurts, i guess it depends how badly you want to do it naturally and get the baby the right way. Like above i think a planned section is better than an emergency one, good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks Franiss and Purple Dahlia - Seems no one is a fan of this at all.

Will say no thanks for sure now. Suppose I just needed the extra reassurance that I'm not just being difficult.

Still have a few more weeks to go so I'll get scrubbing floors and stuff and see if mother nature will do her bit. Otherwise it'll be a c section, which sounds far preferable.

Thanks again!

I've just declined this procedure today after discussion with the consultant the risks sound too great to me and I would rather not distress my LO. Plus he is in an awkward position, plus I've had abdominal surgey in the past and it makes it likely that he can't turn due to internal scarring. It all sounded a little too scary to me. So my C-section is booked for 30th November! Not that I relish that either but I would rather take the stress than put my LO through that.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

have you checked out spinningbabies.com? also some people reckon things like acupuncture, reflexology and moxa sticks have good success at turning breech babies ... depends on how desparate you are to turn them! i've just been told my baby 'might' be breech (after being told since 25w that it wasn't ) ... not sure what they will say if it turns out to be!

i found spinningbabies very complicated and not very clear at all, i got super confused. Also couldnt find a diagram of how Ava is lying, shes back to back aswell they didnt seem to have an option for that.
