has anyone else been prescribed this?

Omeprazole capsules for heartburn. I went to the docs today coz i got sick of paying for gaviscon when i'm going through it so quick so asked for it on prescription.

He said lets go one better and give you something that actually is going to work. So he got his little book out and proceeded to tell me, although there are conclusive tests to say whether its dangerous or not to the baby, he hasnt heard anything otherwise to say so, so he assumes its ok for me to take and its not really going to damage the baby if something did go wrong as i'm too far along to worry about t now

Sounds like a good advert for this stuff to sit in the back of my cupboard.

P.S this wasnt my usual doctor. i never saw him before

So if anyone knows anything at all about this drug, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease let me know coz atm i dont want to take it. i just wanted a bottle of gaviscon

My doc gave me a prescription for peptac, which is exactly the same as gaviscon. Got a massive bottle of it too - can you specifically ask for that next time??

Hi i have not taken it but just googled it (god i am bored) and its a catagory c drug in pregnancy same as the beta blockers i am having to take.
I spose it depends on how bad the heart burn is but i put off taking my drugs for a heart condition till 38 weeks when my consultant told my i had to take them or wouldnt be able to cope with a natural labour. I have been unable to leave the house or do anything because i have stayed off the drugs. So if you could cope on gaviscon i would.

I have taken omiprazole all through my pregnancy (started off with one tablet in the morning and now on 2 - one morn, one eve)... I have found them to be a real relief because my acid was so bad it was making my sick in my sleep...

My GP told me there are no known effects to the baby and I have had several scans (due to a blood clot) and the routine MW appts etc and there has never been an issue with the baby...

obviously you can never be sure but personally I had no issues with taking them and in fact went for my last repeat prescription today!

Believe me - if you acid is as bad as mine they will bring you massive amounts of relief!!
and you will find that as your pregnancy progresses gaviscon will not touch it (but like I say, it depends on the severity of your case!)

x

i got prescribed it some time ago when I went in for stomach pains, I took them for about a week, think it was about the 2week wait time when we were ttc, I was pregnant but later miscarried at 7 weeks. I wouldn't like to say whether there was any connection at all though, I don't really know too much about medical stuff, and that was really early, there might not have been any relation at all, and at your stage of pregnancy it would be way different anyway.... I thought lots of pregnant women got prescribed ranitidine (sp?) and swear by it? can you not go back or go to your usual dr and ask for that instead, and say you are not comfortable in taking it?

I can honestly say that your acid sounds about as bad as it could get you poor thing being sick in your sleep is well dangerous. that must have been well nasty.

Gaviscon touches it for about half hour then i'm back to that agonising twisting knifey type pain and hot sick burps that make your eyes water.

But i havent got long to go now so i could just put up with it. i was just so expecting a bottle of gloop to continue drinking.

Thanx for the feedback on omeprazole tho charlie

Hi Ellie

I wish i could see my own doctor. i havent seen him for about a year. our doctor surgery works on an emergency appointment basis. You ring up, they tell you to come in at 10 and sit n wait to be seen and you see whoever is doing emergencys that day. they arent allowed to make appointments anymore so we never get to see our own doctors. its bloody stupid. you only get 5 minutes with whichever doctor. Usualy when i ring up i get told emergencies are all gone and to ring again 2morow. she started to tell me they were full but i said my MW told meto ring up because of a heart condition and you dont want to be responsible for me croaking it

I think i'm best of just going to boots and buying another bottle of gaviscon

Aww that sounds horrible... if its that bad you could try the omeprazole if you felt okay about it? its a good few weeks to be putting up with it! otherwise try going in again ... sounds like a crappy system, my dr's is like that too, it's so impersonal!
