Ahh blankets.....

I know there's been a few blanket threads before, but I'm soo confused!

I got the Moses basket out for the first time today! Also sorted out what clothes I'm going to take to the hospital!

I have to admit I got all babified, and put a sleepsuit & hat in the basket! Anyway I got all my blankets out and realised I had no idea what to use.

If I list what I have, would you ladies mind telling me what they are used for?!

I have a large cellular blanket, but it needed to be folded 4 times to fit the basket!

A small cellular blanket, it seemed thinner than the other and had to be folded in half to fit.

A small fleece blanket that fitted when in half.

Also a large cloth type blanket (not cellular just thick cloth)

Oh and and a sleeping bag thing, that's only 1 tog.

Sorry if this is long! I'm just so confused as to what to use and don't want to use something that could harm him....

well a 1 tog sleeping bag wont be warm enough in winter, so ud need a small cellular blanket ontop of it, maybe folded once but no more, that would make 3 layers, Also tucked in very tight. u can also swaddle with a blanket and put one ontop tucked in under the mattress. Remember every time a blanket is folded over it counts as an extra layer so if u use the big one folded 4 times its 4 layers... thats probably too many layers.. just judge on the weather on the day.. how warm your house is and baby is.. etc.

well charlie was a summer baby so he was diffrent but i think with harry he'll probably be swadeled in a shawl wool type blanket, and then one or two fleece blankets over the top depending how cold it is xx

edit: thats during the day in the moses basket, on a night i'll probably put one more fleece blanket over, its all about layering really so if he's too warm/to cold u can take off a blanket or two, it comes naturally tho hun i wouldnt worry about it u'll know whats right when the time comes x

If our baby is swaddled what should you put on top? One more layer or two?

Thanks ladies.

Stupid question (I have lots!) what's swaddling? I'm guessing when they are all wrapped up, but how do you do it? Will it not squash the buba?!

Tbh the blanket material is preference & warmth only , Its not like you only use cotton for this or fleece for that if you get me. Its purely which you feel you want to use & going off whether its warm or cold.
I'd still use the 1 tog sleeping bag but add blankets, At least he/she will remain covered

I've got a sleeping bag & 4 thick ish blankets, My 1st hated being swaddled & much preferred to just have blankets over him. So i'll wait & see what this one likes .x

Just a point about the sleeping bags, most cannot be used until baby is about 8lbs. Just checked this on grobags website

When can I first put my baby in a Grobag Baby Sleep Bag?

Our 0-6 months Grobag Baby Sleep Bag can be used for a full-term, 8lb 8oz (4kg) baby from birth. However, if your baby weighs less than 8lb 8oz (4kg) at birth, we recommend you wait a short time, until your baby grows larger. For the first few weeks and for babies under 8lb 8oz (4kg), we recommend the Grobag Swaddle as a safe and easy alternative for your baby. Our 0-6 month size Grobag includes under-arm poppers to reduce the size of the armholes for babies up to 10lbs (4.5kg).

Not sure if other brands specify weight.
