Mucus Plug/Labour Question

Do you have to loose your mucus plug before labour starts?
I have been having period pains for hours now that seem to be about 20 minutes apart.

No, you dont. Sometimes plugs dont go til your waters break which can be when you are well into established labour already.

I didn't lose my mucus plug until about 3 hours before the actual birth. I'd been in labour 5 hours already.
