Aww hun.. I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. Unfortunately it happens a lot, and even without your purse people can take your identity. Also, did you have checks in your purse? Never forget about those since they reveal all of your back information on them. I worked for one of the largest banks in the US before going on leave while being pregnant, and we had fraud cases every single day. Also it happened personally to my mom. She used to write checks a lot, and we are assuming whoever store her information either worked for a store she wrote one at, bought the information from someone who worked at the store, or watched her very carefully while writing the check, and wrote down all of her information. Within 1 day, they had drained close to $10K out of her bank account, by writing fake checks with her account no. Luckily the bank took the loss, but its still scary to know how easy it is for people to steal from you, having just a teeny bit of information. I would definitely recommend signing up for the sight. I use one thru my work, and its great. Anytime there is any inquiry on my credit they alert me immediately. And if there ever were identity theft, they actually investigate everything for me. In the US, the average identity theft victim spends 600 hours trying to repair what happened. It was awful for my mom, because when they did this, she was in the middle of building a new home, and was in the middle of the loan process, when this big alert went out on her credit blocking all new credit accounts... Luckily she got it worked out in time, so she got the mortgage situated, but it took a lot longer.
Sorry for going on... GOod luck hun. And stay away from the gypsies.
