I think the value of the Nct lies in the social aspects and the bonding and support between women and couples. The information provided is useful, but not necessarily anything that couldn't be downloaded!

i could see that some of the other couples 'clicked' with each other, and would chat for a bit with each other after class and you could tell had a lot in common, but that didn't happen with us...for whatever reason we didn't seem to click with anyone

We'll still be going to the reunion in february and we have everyone's email addresses and would like to keep in touch but i can't see us building fantastic friendships because it felt like all we had in common with everyone else was that we were all having babies. And that's it.
I felt very similar at the end of our course, too...

oh p.s a girl in my NCT group went to her first NHS one and it was the same teacher!!! but only 2 classes for an hour each, and the teacher said to her she would get much more out of the NCT one so not to bother with NHS (she had already booked NCT)

Thanks for all your responses ladies, I spoke to the woman at NCT today, and she said similar, that they base the content of the course around what the people on the course want to talk about.

Will discuss with DH tonight, but I'm feeling like it might be worth going, even if we don't "click" with the other people in the group (I'm 29 and DH is 33 so might be closer in age to the rest of the group by the sounds of it).

I worked out our annual income since I was made redundant and it looks like we might get a bit of a discount anyway, which is always a bonus. It's a charity isn't it so I can always make a donation later on once I'm back at work if we get lots out of the course.

This is a VERY good point...!

I do a lot more reading and researching than my husband - who flicks through the occassional pregnancy/baby book (despite us buying several "for dads", "idiots' guides" etc just for him... ). Virtually all of the other men at the class admitted to doing the same... but they all seemed (strangely for my shy husband!) to enjoy being "spoon fed" information in the class (with graphics and interaction) and openly discussing it all.

Us women probably bond with other pregnant women anyway (through site slike this, through prenatal yoga classes etc), but men don't seem to have the same outlets. The NCT classes seem invaluable for helping "dads-to-be" bond and share experiences.

It is really nice to do things as a couple too.

I've got my first one on Saturday and me and hubby are really looking forward to it... will seem like things are really progressing towards us meeting our baby!
Heard fantastic things about them and they're much more comprehensive and inclusive of the men in our lives, plus as other ppl have said, the group demographics seem to suit us better with regards to age etc.

I agree on the networking point, although I think the one I would have to go to would be so far away from where I live that, unless someone else had to travel a similar distance, it's unlikely I'd find anyone to keep in touch with anyway.
Have you tried prenatal yoga? That's the thing that's told me so much about breathing and positions. Golden thread breath during contractions and ujayyi breath for in between. They also do a yoga birth preparation class which goes through this in more details with good positions and movements for each stage of labour but the last one we couldn't go to and the next one might be a bit too late?
