unfortunately we do have to pay tax on maternity pay... I was shocked to find that out recently... not sure how much it works out at though... think it all depends on how much you have earned previously...

i asked the girl who does our wages & she said there isn't an exact amount but it should level itself out after a while... great help!!! lol

Sorry I can't be more helpful on this one

Am I right in thinking that your employer will take your pension contribution off your maternity pay (for all that it will be ?!)

But, on the otherhand, is it not possible we will be in line for a tax rebate as obviously won't be earning the same so will have paid too much tax for the year ?!

I'm so rubbish at all this stuff, it turns my head to jelly!!
I am just waiting to see what I come out with at the end of the month. I think how much tax you pay depends on how much you earnt previously but not really sure to be honest. This will be my first full month on SMP so going to see what my payslip says and then and only then will I know.
I have bought my pension down to the lowest payment that still means my employer contributes, so that will come out of it too.

I like the idea of a tax rebate :-) Hadn't thought about that!!

I think it is about 430 if I can remember rightly, but I donīt get payslips sent through properly so its a bit vague. Think it is so bad they tax us too.

I don't know it can't be loads though surely? Don't forget to factor in child benefit and also check what tax credits you might be entitled to.

Our payrole person thinks I will also get a tax rebate in April too

well i dont pay tax on my SMP but they take out your NI but this isn't alot.

if you have a pension or savings coming out of your normal wages these will still come out of your SMP.

but the 6 weeks you get 90% of your wages you pay tax at the normal rate.x

hope this helps oh and dont worry you learn to live on minimum money after a while.x.x.
