Who plans on avoiding the epidural by all means possible?

Since epidurals have become such a common practice all over the world, I wonder how many of you girls wanna avoid it if possible?
I know I for sure do because I don't like the idea of having a section of my body numb and not being in control.

I think I will try the gas as my first option, and epidural ONLY as a last resort.

I really haven't been able to make up my mind on this topic. I think though that I will keep it open as an option, just in case I can't stand the pain.

I wanted to avoid it, and did so by waiting as long as possible at home just getting through my contractions with breathing/relaxing. It was too late for an epidural when I got in, so I couldn't change my mind and just had gas and air. x

I really want to avoid this too. Most people I know have back problems now because the epidural. Especially in really cold or really hot temperatures. Most people I speak to as well wish they never took it. Ive constantly stated throughout my birth plan that I really dont want it.
I also want to aviod being induced, apparently the pain is worse and comes on you at once so your body has less time to adapt and your more likely to opt for an epidural. So am havin lotsa curry the now

I really want to avoid it if I can. Like you I don't like the idea of not feeling anything. I'd rather be in pain - since it's natural anyway and know whats going on down there. I think the pain helps you work harder anyway and speeds things up. With an epidural your more likely to need help or have a c-section.

Gas and air is my first option of pain relief too. I don't care how much it hurts - I'm determind I'm not having an epidural.

I am dead set on avoiding any pain management alltogether. I know all pregnancies/deliveries are different, but if my mom could have all 6 of us without any pain meds, then I could too (hopefully).

I am going to try to avoid having one. I ever had one first time around as by the time I really wanted one it was too late but, I am really glad I never had one.

I will play it by ear but along with a C Section an Epidural is something I'd rather not have.

well with all 3 of my girls i avoided having one. i made sure that while i was still sane i could tell my hubby not to allow me to have one and i also told the midwife too. with my first daughter i had to have a vontouse and an episiotomy and that was done with no pain relief what so ever. The most excrutiating pain ever altho i must admit i did it without and epidural.

xxxxx

Ditto Nikky, I don't want any drugs whatsoever and that includes gas and air. I'm having a homebirth (provided nothing goes wrong, touch wood) so there won't be any thoughts about drugs.
