NCT Breastfeeding session

Hi everyone

We just came back from NCT class, and tonight was the breastfeeding session.

The breastfeeding counsellor was brilliant and I feel much more confident about breastfeeding now...I'm almost looking forward to it!

It was really good....

She did the usual stuff of going into detail about how good it is for you and for the baby, and then she used dolls to shows us how to hold the baby, the cues to look for when they are ready to latch on and gave us some good advice about doing it the NCT way (as opposed to the way the midwives in the hospital tell you).

Apparently you need to hold the baby completely facing you against your body and line them up nose to nipple, and wait for them to put their heads back, open their moves very wide and stick their tongues out...apparently its a question of timing...if you pull the baby towards your boob firmly when their mouth is wide open they will get the whole boob as opposed to the nipple only (which is what causes the pain)

She also said that if the baby is not latched on properly you should keep starting again until they are.

I guess everyone has their own way of doing things, but I found it really helpful, and I'm actually looking forward to it now!

We found our NCT breastfeeding class fab too i found it really useful and honest. it's nice to know there's someone you can call if you need advice too.

I've also found a local breastfeeding support group through a friend which i'm going to get myself acquainted with before LO arrives.

Oh yeah - I forgot - she gave us a card with all her details no it and said we could call her whenever and she would either try and help over the phone, or if that was no good we could go to her house or she would come to ours...

Its great to know there's that kind of support out there!!

This might seem like a silly question but do only the women go to the breastfeeding session or partners too?

For us it's partners too, not sure if that's the same everywhere? I imagine so though, even though they don't technically need to know how to get baby latched on etc, it's good for them to be there so they can learn how to support you i guess.

Yeah - ours was fellas too - she said it was good for them to be there because then there are 2 people to remember the techniques. I think its also important for them to be there so they realise that its a difficut thing to do and they need to be supportive!

I read in Jules Oliver's book that they actually got their boobs out in her class (no men allowed) so I was really worried what ours would be like...I asked in the first week about it and she said it was men too so I relaxed a bit!!
