I was diagnosed just by my high BP and protien in urine and swelling...and if you have a headache that doesnt seem to go away that is a big sign of high BP. just rest some til your appointment especially if you are feeling bad...I dont know what your Dr will do if you have it but I was put on strict bedrest (only allowed to get up to go to the bathroom) and was monitored daily with a traveling nurse and had to go to the Dr weekly. I also had u/s everytime I went and NST several times. but all places do things differently.

I've had major swelling of my hands and feet for weeks now couple with the odd headache but my BP and urine have all shown negative for Pre Eclampsia.
Fingers crossed it's nothing sweetie, but it always is worth getting checked out, just to be on the safe side. Dont leave anything to chance!

Hey hun yes they will test your urine for protein. Starts as a trace lowest level and goes to maxium of ++++ (which is the life threatening part) the lower part of your BP measurement will be classed as high if it is over 90 ie 120/90 although the 90 is the cut off point if you registered with pretty low BP ie 90/65 or something they would class you as high when you get into the over 85's. If you have all these as well as the headaches and swelling they still wont diagnose you until your blood tests prove for definate so be prepared to get blood taken. Good thing is the results are super fast (20 mins for me each time)

Then if your blood tests are positive it means your kidneys are failing and that is when you will be diagnosed. This has been the case for me in all 3 pregnancies. At that point you will be put on medication to bring the BP down and be on daily monitoring until they can get you to a safe part to induce. They wanted to get me to 36 weeks but my kidneys started failing at 34 plus so they only got me to 35 before induction.

As I said only blood tests will confirm. If that comes back negative they wont do anything except keep an eye on you

Good luck hun

Sorry for long post but there aint nothing abotu it I dont know unfortunately

Thanks for the info Edinsam, that was really helpful. I've had protein in my urine (without any culture) off and on for the past few weeks and my blood pressure keeps rising and dropping. I haven't had swelling but i've had headaches that are persistant along with visual disturbances so my midwife did some bloods on Tues to check kidney function. She's worried that it could be pre-eclampsia, obviously we're hoping it isn't. I'm glad i read your post because i was really confused about the kidney function test and why that would be classed as definitive proof of pre-eclampsia. Thank you!

I would definately get it checked out. My doc told me he doesn't worry so much about feet and legs, but more about when your hands and feet swell. Goodluck to you!

Hi harmony - glad to be of help! Basically when u start to get protein in urine it means your kidneys are not coping. The protein in the urine is actually released from your kidneys as an alert really and their way of coping. When you start to hit the ++++ then your kidneys are not coping at all. Goodlluck with your blood tests although I suspect as you are quite far on now that they might just decide to induce u anyway to be on the safe side.

Good news is pre eclampsia pretty much dissapear after birth. I was medicated for about 2 weeks purely as a precaution and it's only a month since lily born and I am absolutely fine.

Other thing to note is people do get induced with pre eclam ( depending how serious of course) u have a cathater in so they can test your protein throughout labour - that was worst part for me.
