Antibodies in blood?

I hope someone can shed some light on this. I went to see the consultant today to get my GTT results which came back fine but the blood test department had said they had found some antiblodies in my blood so I had to go back for more blood tests today so that they could determine which ones. Anyone had any experience with this or can shed some light on what it actually means? Thanks

Your blood group may be A but you will also have a Rhesus attached to it be it Negative or Positive.

As I understand it the antibodies that can attack subsequent babies can only be set up in Rhesus negative blood which is probably why your midwife panicked a bit.
Check your notes, if you are A Rhesus Negative it will say in your notes as it is important.

Having said that as you don't know which antibodies have been set up I'd wait and see the answer to that first before worrying about the next bit!

You must be a negative blood group? Doesn't matter which A,B. If thats the case you will get an anti-d shot.

My understanding is if the anitbodies have already been set up, there is no point in having an Anti D as it's too late but I am willing to be corrected on that!

Antibodies in your blood does not always relate to your blood group.

Yes your body will produce antibodies if you are Rhesus - and baby is Rhesus + and somehow babies blood has gotten into yours -in a fall/accident/abruption etc

BUT...your body will produce antibodies for other reasons like infection! If you have caught a cold/flu or been with someone who has had an illness or you have any kind of infection your body will be making antibodies.

You may have a mild infection that you havent even noticed so there are antibodies in your blood.

they will be checking which ones so they know whether you need any treatment or baby needs any extra protection.
