Discharge - might be TMI!!

I was admitted to the hospital on Thurs afternoon after a very constantly lower back pain... I had the Vaginal Examination and had the monitor on my bump for contractions.. They thinks I was in early labour, but caught one of the staff do VE and saw the blood on her hand, they dont say anything about it which was making me wondered! So I was admitted to the ward before that, they mentioned that my cervix is closed but outside of it is 3cm open.

What is the hell is that about?

So next day, I got the brown discharge that started to come out after the blood has been disturbed. I sent home because they are happy that the outside of cervix had not been changed within 24 hours as they checked my vagina but still getting lower back pain. (My mum said it sounds like as if I am in slow labour.)

Can anyone explain what is the brown discharge, is that a sign that something will be happening anytime?

Thanks!

Sounds like you maybe lost your plug. Brown discharge is just old blood. Once blood gets oxygen and starts to clot, it turns brown. As long as it isn't bright red, you're ok. And if I've read correctly, you can lose your plug weeks before ever going into labour and delivering.

That's not anything I've found on Google.. just from reading threads on here and other women's experiences (and knowing how blood changes).

Just my opionion, but I would say the brown discharge is from the examination. Everytime I am checked I get a little brown or pink blood for a few hours. I may be wrong.

I'm getting weekly checks at the moment and always bleed after them, which turns to brown discharge. Its just old blood, like when your period ends.

Hey hun. I was admitted a few weeks back with pain and reduced movement, and i had to have an examination. When they passed the speculum they found i was bleeding, quite a lot of fresh red blood, and that combined with the pain etc made them decide to keep me in, even though everything was looking great with baby on the monitor, my cervix was closed, and i wasn't contracting.

Anyway, the next morning the bleeding had settled but then around lunch time i had a tiny bit more, and then some brown mucus type discharge started to come away. When i was reviewed by the doctors they decide to keep me for a second night because they couldn't be sure if the bleeding and discharge was from the examination or if my mucus plug was coming away. Anyway my pain settled and the brown discharge started to tail off and i was finally allowed home the next day.

I would say that what you're experiencing is probably some old blood coming away following the examination you had. The other possibility is that it could be your mucus plug but that's nothing to worry about either, as the plug can start to come away weeks before labour begins, and also can regenerate.

Hope that helps.
