Swine Flu vaccine?

I'm 36 weeks at the moment and looking at this, I don't know what to do.

The stuff on it says that pregnant women can have it, but babies under 6 months can't, so if I'm going to have it, I need to have it before baby is born.

However, Just how much of a problem is this? I don't like the thought of making myself ill (as most vaccines do) just because.

Apparently they say to wait until youre contacted by your GP.....my GP is hopeless (never send my bloods over, never call with results like they promise) so how on earth am I supposed to judge this? I have an appointment with the MW at 38 weeks- would she know?

Thanks....just thought I'd ask. I'm not panicking....tbh I'd rather not have it as I really don't like needles or taking medicine for no reason.

your MW should know yes... and its probably better to get advice from her on it instead of your GP.. your GP will try to persuade you to have it as he gets paid 7 pounds per injection they administer!

I don't think I'm going to have it.....but I need a LOT more information.

My main issue with it, is if babies under 6 months can't have it, why are they happy to give it to pregnant ladies, as surely it'll reach our LOs....doesn't make sense to me!

Plus I think unless you have underlying medical issues we are strong, and can fight off the flu.....after all that's all it is, the flu! We've all had it before.

NB they DO give pregnant women the normal flu jab. Im having it in a couple of weeks.....its perfectly normal for pregnant women around the country to have flu jabs if they have other health issues that make it dangerous for them not to have it (such as I have COPD)

That doesnt mean this one is fine it just means that the "normal" flu jab is seen as safer than the consequences of flu for certain groups of pregnant women with certain health issues.

I would take the normal flu jab if i could get that instead of the swine flu one.. im not taking the swine flu one but the normal one has been around and been given to pregnant people (clearly) all over the globe for years. So maybe we should ask if thats possible.

i would consider it with a lot of info if i had really bad asthma or other underlying health conditions. but i feel like im fit and healthy if i get the flu to fight it off as any other person would.

As another squish said they do give pregnant woman the flu jab if they have othe medical problems just like they only give it to non pregnant people with other probs.
The fact they think we are high risk and are offering it to us all means they think we need it but i would be worried about it as how many pregnant women has this been tested on. I recon the choice has to go on your own level of risk so depends on health problems such as athsma etc.

Zero is the answer, medical ethics prevent them from conducting clinical trials on pregnant women, this is why so few medicines are considered safe for pregnancy, not necessarily because they're unsafe it's just no one is prepared to do the testing and risk a backlash on such an emotive subject. Most clinical trials are conducted in the first instance on healthy male volunteers, they won't even risk a possibility of a women being pregnant.

I wouldn't be on the list to get the usual seasonal flu jab, as swine isn't as bad as some other strains of flu I am highly skeptical as to why it is so urgent I get this one and not the other one.

It smacks of vote winning tactics on the governments behalf rather than any genuine desire to protect people.
