swine flu

my niece has been ill for about a week now and the Doc said it was a virus but we have just heard she has just been rushed up to hospital with suspected swine flu - really hope she doesn't have this but also worried about what it means for me.

Were you in close contact with her recently? You might be ok, some people have strong immune systems. Wait and see if it is infact swine flu she has.. they will be able to tell you when the incubation/contagious period was and you can work out if you were near her. Keep as healthy as you can and lets hope your fine! xx

Hey, hon. Have a wee search through the forums because someone started a swine flu thread a while back and lots of people posted who had contratced it so you may get some advice there. I really hope that you and your neice are okay

So sorry to here this, hope your neice gets well soon. Have you been to see her or her family recently while she has been ill. If so i would speak to your midwife and let her know the situation, most pregnant ladies seem to cope fine with swine flu but they might want to take extra precations for labour etc as you are so close. I dont know really but it cant hurt to let them know, even if its just to put your mind at ease. Hope all is ok.

I think the advice is keep the vitamin C up to try and fight it off in the first place, if you start feeling rubbish you can have the inhaler vaccine (not tamiflu) and paracetamol to try and keep your temp down.

There are a few threads of swine flu survivors but I've not seen one for a while. NHS direct is also has quite a good pregnancy/swine flu bit on their website.

Hope you're ok and you niece gets better soon.

I had swine flu in June. If I remember rightly it's most contagious in the first 48 hrs, but can't be 100% sure.

If you're worried I'd call either your GP or midwife. Fingers crossed you'll be fine. Xx

Thanks everyone, I haven't been in contact with her but I did see her Mum just last Wednesday when it all started so I don't know if that would put me at any risk. The main problem is my own Mum will have to be helping out with the other kids so I'll have to stay away from her maybe. I have hyperemesis so I'd be worried that my immunity would be very low at the minute as I can't really feed myself very well at the minute. I have a hospital appointment tomorrow so I guess I should mention it then just to see what they think. Thanks for all your replies, I'll go have a wee search for the other threads x

good idea about keeping up the vit C, but i think the incubation period where it can be passed on is more than 48 hours, think its 3-4 days, then you get sick. so she would of been in incubation before she got ill. Thats when its contagious. Hope your all ok!

They are telling everyone here to keep their kids home for 7 days (from school) Our middle school the past week has had 15% of kids home sick with flu symptoms! Such a big number since school just started here Sept 9th! Usually not seeing kids out sick with the flu til closer to winter. My dh's boss is going to the dr today as she thinks she has h1n1 - she was exposed over the weekend from a child who has h1n1 and his boss missed work wed and now today with symptoms.
