I am planning on doing both if possible. Will be in uni from he is about 10 weeks so I will have to express whilst someone else is looking after him.

Am trying to do as much research at the minute so that I am as prepared as I can be...fingers crossed it all works out!

My LO wouldn't latch and I did this for 2 weeks and struggled at that. It was a nightmare. I'd have a million percent preferred to have been able to directly breastfeed most of time and just given the odd EBM bottle.

In the early days we had so many visitors, I just didn't feel able to pump in front of people such as my Dad. And you certainly can't sit there pumping when you're out. EBM is a pain when you're out too, at least if you FF you can take a single serve carton out and pour into the bottle when LO is ready. Plus when your OH goes back to work you'll probably have a hard time trying to pump while single handedly looking after the baby.

I am not sure EBM lasts 6 months in the fridge either. Plus after 6 months the milk would be wrong for your LO, as it changes according to your LO's age and nutritional needs.

I think excl or partial expressing for a time is a great way to get BM into your LO if they really won't latch or you have a medical issue. But it's far from a long term solution.

I have found it handy just to do it when i need to, its more of a convenience thing, if im in a rush or feel like i my boobs are full and she wont wake etc i just express.
But if i cant be bothered i just boobie feed , id say im about 75% boob and 25% expressing
Im sure it will be more handy as she gets older and i need to go places.

I did that with my son for 6 months and I tell you it was aloot of work and would have been easier just to put up with the initial pain and just breastfeed. to actually keep your milk supply going even if you have alot of milk ( I would get 6 oz out of each breast at forthe first few months) you have to pump at least every 4 hours day and night so for 6 months straight i was pumping every 4 hours and despite that the electric pump is not as good as the baby in terms of sucking out the milk so the milk supply will decrease eventually and run out which is what happened to me. for the last few months of pumping I had to also use formula. Im sorry if this sounds all negative.. it was nice to have hubby feed him sometimes but this time around I am going to try my best to put up with the pain cuz i heard it goes away after a few weeks.
