Glucose Tolerance Test.... What they will do to me?

I went to the hospital to have a growth scan after seen my midwife yesterday - turned out to be my baby is measured big and EFW is around 6lb and 5oz. My consultation is sending me for GTT for next Tues morning to check if my baby have diabetes or not due to its being big. So what will they do to me? Need some explaination or give me a clear pic on this. x

It depends on which test they give you. There's the 1 hr test and the 3 hr test. For the 1 hr, you just go in and they give you a syrupy drink that has 50g of glucose (or possibly Lucozade) that you have to drink within 5 mins. Then after 1 hour, they draw your blood and that's it. You'll get the results in a few days.

For the 3 hr test, you have to fast before the test, go in and have blood drawn, then drink a syrupy drink that has 100g of glucose (or, again, Lucozade) that you have to drink within 5 mins. Then they draw your blood 3 more times... after 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours. And again, you'll get the results in a few days.

I had a glucose tolerance test the other day (as far as i know) I had to fast from 9pm the evening before and then I had one blood sample taken at 8-35 the next morning. I didnt get asked to drink anything. This was done through my local surgery though not at a hospital or anything and it was carried out to check for gestational diabetes. HOpe this helps x

Hi Nanaki

It sounds like you are having the standard GTT - i would imagine they will test your blood levels when you arrive and then give you a sugary drink and test again, probably 2 hours later. That's what i had - i do have GD. By the way the test is to see if you have diabetes, not the baby. If you have it, it means that your body may not be processing and breaking down all the glucose in your system so it therefore passes to the baby and can make the baby get bigger. Good luck - hope all goes well!

I've got GD too. Bring a book or an ipod or something, because it's very boring to sit in the waiting room that long.
And after I had my drink, I became very light headed during the first hour, so bring a water bottle or ask for a paper cup for some water- if it's really bad, let them know and you'll be able to go lie down while waiting to have your blood drawn again.

But Amandas is right, it's not the baby, it's you. It's just something that can happen when you're pregnant, it's nothing you did, but the baby takes on the responsibility to break down what you can't, which causes the baby to grow, BUT that doesn't mean all of LO is growing, most of the time, LO's lungs don't develop as quickly as the body is growing. So it's really important to know and to take care of it so LO stays healthy!
