Natural tear vs episiotomy

Anyone have any experience of this already? Which heals faster/better? I'm trying to write my birth plan so I'm looking into it but finding a lot of conflicting points.

xx

Looking into what? You might not even tear, and they will only give you an episiotomy if really necessary, not just because natural tears aren't neat.

I was very lucky and didn't tear, only having what the midwife described as a'tiny nick'. This was one of the things I was quite anxious about toward the end of my first pregnancy and my midwife told me that unless it is absoultley necessary they would rather let you tear naturally as it is meant to heal faster and with less risk of infections etc.

I'm sure Amy means that on her birth plan, if for what ever reason it looks like she is going to tear, would it be better to suffer a tear or an episiotomy - and what would her preference be.

Hi Amy, sorry - as this is my first pregnancy i would not know what one or the other feels like, or the healing process. On my birth plan i have opted for it to be the judgment call of the midwife who is attending me, however for it to be discussed with me first if there is time.

Good luck with your birth plan

Thanks Diz.

I think this seems like the best idea, I'll add this to my birth plan and fingers crossed it doesn't come up!!

I am in the same boat. Think I will ask for episiotomy if necessary, but I am quite aware that this may not be possible. I am really hoping for a baby that comes out like a flower fairy and then expands in my hand - what do you think the chances are????? hehehe

Amy xx

I had a small tear, which was only due to fact amber came out with her hand on her ear! Silly baby, lol!
I had about 2 stitches, yes they hurt but id rather it happen naturally than be cut tbh.
Stitches had gone when mw did home visit few days later, just generally sore below for 2 weeks later

The MW won't cut you unless the baby is in distress or needs to be delivered with forceps or vacuum or if you're gonna have horrendous tearing (talking about ripping from vagina into rectum and what not.. really bad tearing). Episiotomys aren't routine at all. They'll let you tear naturally instead of cutting you.
