Rear Facing Car Seat in Front?

Hi there,
We are currently looking at Maxi Cosi Car seats, but can't find one that will fit in the front seat of any car. We are 1st time parent, so are probably being a bit dim, but is this because they are unsafe to go in the front passenger seat?

Also does a newborn need to be forward or rear-facing in a car? And what is the difference between easy fix and an easy base car seat? And how long will it last??!!

It's such a minefield, any help is much appreciated!!
Thanks Caroline

A lot with the front seats are to do with frotn airbags, but i am pretty conivinced your not recommened them in front any more. the car bases go on back seat and your car seat clicks in and out so u do not need to worry about faffing with seat belt each time
Not exact information i am fraid but a rough idea for you

We have just got our maxi cosi car seat, we will be putting it in the back just so we dont have to worry about airbags ect, they can go in the front or the back as long as no air bags and you need a rear facing car seat until the baby is able to support its own head incase of any impact, usually around 9months they out grow them and then you can get a stage 2 forward facing car seat - hope that helps - my sister had a baby 5 months ago so been getting info from her!xxx

Hope you don't mind my popping in from 2nd but, yes, rear facing carseats in the front are SOOOOO dangerous. In the US, it's actually illegal to put an infant in the front seat at all. They MUST be in the back seat, preferably in the middle seat of the rear, in a rear-facing seat. That is considered the safest location in a car in the event of an auto accident from any direction (rear-end, head-on or side).

I think its because new cars all have front airbags and they tend to put the iso-fix fittings in the rear seats so mummy and daddy can sit in the front.
I had a new clio a year or so ago and it had a switch that you could switch off the front airbag.

I dont have iso-fix fittings in my car (landrover) now, so I think I would have to get the easyfix base which secures with the normal seat belt, then you can still just clip the car seat on to it.
I'm not bothering with the base though because little one will be sitting in the front with me if daddy isnt in the car

Yes, it is recommended that babies go in the back seat. In fact all kids under 12 should be in the back.

Wow interesting to read how different it is here Bam. We have to have baby in a side seat with the front seat a small gap away, thats considered the safest here! xxx

Hi, i think back seats are meant to be safer,
Are you in the uk, if so go to your nearest halfords and they will talk you through it, there is so many to choose from and you need to check its safe for your car.
Lots of new research at the mo on it being safer for babies to lie flat so we are getting the britax lie flat car seat that looks like its a carrycot. Its also is the safest in which online.

Agreed with all of the girls, the backseat is the safest place for baby. I'd highly recommend the isofix base. We have the Maxi Cosi Priori for our daughter, and the Mico for baby. With our daughter, the base was a must have. Its so much quicker and easier. Here they recommend that babies are rear facing until at least 1 year and 20 lbs. However, if you have a two seater car, look in your manual about how to turn the airbags off. A lot of a little slot you can put the key in, and turn passenger airbags off.
