Gestational Diabetes

Well after my three hour glucose test yesterday my doctor called me this morning and told me I had abnormal results which means I have gestational diabetes. Had to go to the hospital this morning to get all the stuff to monitor my blood sugar levels, which I have to do 2 hours after every meal, fun. I guess it's pretty normal with twins, something with the two placentas and insulin.

Does anyone else have this?? Any tips on what to and what not to eat?? She didn't really explain it to me very well

I had GD in both my pregnancies. At first it's a bit overwhelming but you get used to monitoring your blood glucose and figuring out the right things to eat.

Ask your doctor if it's possible for you to consult with a dietician, that helped me loads. What I remember mostly is this:

Breakfast was the most difficult for me, I couldn't eat 2 spoonfuls of cheerios and my blood glucose went through the roof! I had to limit my carbs severely at breakfast and eat more carbs 2 hours later, then it was ok.

3 meals a day was not a good plan, 5-6 smaller meals during the day kept the blood glucose down.

I ate nothing with added sugar, checked all labels for: sugar, honey, fructose, corn syrup etc etc. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame don't raise the blood glucose but I was carefull not to consume too much, only if I had severe cravings, lol.

I had to limit dairy products because of the lactose and I couldn't drink fruit juice. I also couldn't eat much fruit.

I tried to eat normal food but tried to add more protein and fiber to my diet.

----------------------

Everything went normal with my deliveries and the babies were an average size. I did need an IV because I needed insuline and the babies were taken to the nicu for observation after the birth. I think all hospitals have a different protocol with GD women in labour so I'd ask my doctor about how this will affect your birthing experience.

I hope this helps, but if you can't consult a dietician just google! There are lots of great pages with info on GD.

Good luck

Well it wasn't my normal doctor who called to tell me, she basically called and said that I had to go to the pharmacy to get the testing stuff, see a nurse to find out how to use it, and then I have an appointment in two weeks with a nutritionist. Which really makes no sense, since even if I test now and get high results, I have no idea what to and what not to eat, but I guess what can you expect from military hospitals lol

Haha, well I'm sure you´ll learn a lot from the nutritionist. Feel free to pm me anytime if you have any questions

One thing I forgot to mention: If your readings are really high, don't stop eating carbs just to get a low reading. You need the carbs too, just try to eat more "good carbs". If the readings are still high you´ll probably need insulin.

If you starve yourself from carbs your body will produce ketones (sp?) and that's not so good.
