just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes

As the title says I've had a phonecall this morning following my test yesterday to say my levels are too high and i have Gestational diabetes

Got to go back to the hospital tomorrow to see the dietician, diabetic nurse and new consultant( already under one for pre eclampsia in last pregnancy). Feeling really fed up and feel like it's my fault. I am overweight but do eat generally healthily(don't exercise much admittedly) and i've only put 16 pounds on so far which i think is good.

Anyone else in the same boat? I'm worried about how it will affect the baby.

I had GD when i was preg. You will have to watch what you eat, and hopefully that will be enough to control your sugar. It was for me, very rarely do woman need insulin so dont start worry about that just yet. I was induced as it is policy where i live to induce after 40 weeks for woman with GD, they just feel its a bit risk for the baby to be in there longer than that, though that may not be policy at all where you live, and you may pop before. It a bit annoying GD but totally livable and poses no threat to your baby as long as you dont let your sugar go out of control. They will be watching the size of the baby as GD moms tend to have big babies.

There is nothing to worry about like cupcake said alot more care is put into women with GD. I felt the same like it was my fault, but it is controllable and you'll do anything for your LO.

Thanks for the reassurance, just feel a bit shocked as didn't have it with my daughter and she was only 6lb 3 and dn't think i'd cope with a big baby! I'll just have to see what they say tomorrow and at least one bonus is i get extra scans so will see Kermit again!

You get extra scans, you get really careful monitoring and you won't go over due... but induced instead.

i've not been classed as having GD but have been told to watch my sugar levels. in a way i would rather have been told i had GD as at least then i would be monitiored and not just hoping that what i'm doing is good for baby. i have been watching what i eat alot more closely. baby weight is fine as had a private scan at 31 weeks and i will be asking for another random blood sugar to be done in my next appointment to put my mind at rest.
you will be guided through what you need to do. it is not your fault what has happened its just nature and no-one can be free from worry that pregnancy brings with it.
this is myt first and although i have had no other symptoms i am ready for out now and wont be in a hurry to do it again as my stress levels have never been so high and i cant keep my hormones in check so over past few days have just been crying for no apparent reason!

Well went ot the hospital and they showed me how to use the monitor to check my blood sugar levels 4 times a day(spent most of yesterday crying as had to prick my finger 10 times to get blood as test strips kept showing error after breakfast and lunch) and it hurt and i HATE needles. Just hoping when i go back next week that i don't need to start injecting insulin.
Good news about the growth scan tho as it showed baby is exactly as it should be, i have to have another one at 34 weeks. The consultant also said that if i keep my levels under control they will let me go to 38 weeks and then induce me as after 38 weeks there is more chance of stillbirth. If there not weel controlled it may be earlier.

Glad to hear your babies doin well. Sorry to here you not getting on well with testing your blood though. I am waiting for my GD test results and my mum suggested taking my blood sugar level on her finger pricking machine thing. I just couldnt do it lol. god help me if my results come back +ve and i have to do that 4 times a day. I am sure it gets easier though, Hope you dont need the insulin too that would finish me off.

Hi hun, I was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago too. A lot of my family have Type 1 diabetes so I've had a long time to get used to needles, hopefully you'll find testing easier after a while. Make sure that you haven't got the lancet on too strong, you would probably only need it to be on the first dial as your skin wouldn't have hardened to it.

There's nothing you've could have done, dont think it's your fault in any way, it's just the way some of our bodies react to pregnancy.

Just keep a close check on your sugars after you eat and dont feel too bad if they start to go up even though you're eating properly, the more pregnant you get the less your own insulin works, mine did after only a week so I've had to go on insulin and honestly, the needle is tiny you dont feel it, the pin prick to test your blood is worse.

I'm being really closely monitored and I'll either be induced or have a c-section around 38 weeks.

Hope it goes well hun
